Valuable Technical and Historical Documentation

The International Hydrofoil Society has assembled a significant collection of technical and historical documentation dealing with hydrofoils and other high performance ships. Until now this material has been largely unavailable.

Over 15,000 pages of detailed information are contained in two Advanced Marine Vehicle CD-ROMs. The IHS Newsletter CD-ROM contains 90 issues spanning the years 1978-2003, with 1850 articles on hydrofoil progress.

For details and ordering information visit the Society's web site at www.foils.org/ihspubs.htm (where a wealth of other hydrofoil information and pictures can also be found).

PE Update

This is another reminder that the closing date for filing applications with your State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors is rapidly approaching. (42 states offered the NAME exam to its applicants last year) If you are planning to take the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME) Professional Engineer exam on Friday, April 15, 2005, you must remember that some states require initial application submittals in the November- December period with final documents due in December-January period. In order to find out how to contact your state board, go to www.ncees.org and then click on Licensing Boards. A listing of all 55 state boards and jurisdictions will come up. By clicking on your state or jurisdiction, you will find information as to the Office Location, Mailing Address, Phone and Fax numbers, email address, web site, contact person (typically the Executive Director) and a listing of the board members (generally with their email addresses as well).

The 2005 NAME P.E. Review Course (PERC) in now getting ready for registration. Second Alligator Symposium Report

The second conference dedicated to the Hunt for the Alligator, the U.S. Navy's first submarine, convened at Nauticus in Norfolk, Virginia on Saturday 30 October. A welcome by Richard Conti, Director of Nauticus, was followed by short opening remarks by Rear Admiral Jay Cohen, Chief of Naval Research, who related the story of how he first became aware of the Alligator and described the technological, educational, and historical importance of the Hunt.

Dan Basta, Director of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Marine Sanctuary Program described the value of the Alligator Hunt as a means to involve students in the sciences. Bombarded by sound bites and repeatedly told that "the next big thing" is the most important, it has become, according to Basta, increasingly difficult to get Americans to focus on serious problemssuch as the decrease in the numbers of students proficient in math and science. Alligator is a "compelling hook" with which to interest students in science, as well as to interest the public in our oceans. Finding the vessel is a significant challenge but we need "great challenges to do great things," concluded Basta. Given the small size of Alligator, its probable resting place near the edge of the continental shelf, and the limitations of existing technology, finding it will certainly be a very great thing.
