Section Paper Accredited for
PE Continuing Education Credit

The paper, “The New Generation of Diesel Engines,” presented by Poul Korsgaard of MAN-B&W to a joint meeting of the NY Metropolitan Section, the Eastern USA Branch of IMarEST, and the Society of Marine Port Engineers of NY on October 14th, was accredited by the Practicing Institute of Engineering for one PDH (Professional Development Hour).

PIE is authorized by the New York State Education Department to approve continuing education programs for PEs in NY, and its ratings are generally recognized by other states. SNAME has been working with PIE, which also accredited the SNAME papers that were presented at the SMTC in Washington DC last month, and has submitted an application to be recognized as a sponsor of continuing education programs for PEs. In the interim SNAME Technical Director Professor Alan Rowen has been certified as an evaluator for these programs, and will soon be circulating guidelines to SNAME Sections and conference committees.

Accredited Section presentations and conference papers not only support all SNAME members who require continuing education credit, but may also improve attendance by drawing other professionals to participate in our activities.

Unveiling of Shipbuilder Monument

A ceremony to celebrate the installation of The Shipbuilder will be held Sunday, October 31, 2004 from 12:30 P.M. until 1:15 P.M. in Waterfront Park in Old Town Alexandria. Mayor Bill Euille and members of the Alexandria City Council will participate in the ceremony.

The Shipbuilder is a 7’ bronze statue of a 19th century rigger atop a 3’ elaborately carved granite base. The statue is a gift to the City of Alexandria and will be placed in Waterfront Park, at the foot of Prince Street along the Potomac River, the site of some of Alexandria’s original shipyards. The monument is a primary project of Alexandria Arts Safari, a nonprofit organization that supports public art, education and history projects.

The Shipbuilder is a tribute to the craftsmen in an industry that played a critical role in Alexandria’s development, honoring the dedicated men and women who worked as shipbuilders in America. The lasting historical, artistic, and educational value of this project make The Shipbuilder a truly vital and worthwhile expression of our national and community maritime heritage and the enduring legacy of the shipbuilding industry.

Nationally-renowned classical sculptor, Michael Curtis was commissioned to sculpt the monument. Curtis’ statues grace the halls of The Supreme Court and The Library of Congress, as well as museums, corporate headquarters, and public buildings throughout the United States. Mr. Curtis developed the idea of a heroic figure of a shipbuilder and, after considerable research, determined that a rigger would provide both a striking figure appropriate to the industry’s history and an example of a typical skilled craftsman who often undertook dangerous work to accomplish the task of building some of the finest ships in the world. His rigger is wearing a canvass coat to protect his clothing; a tradition at the time to protect their own clothing, a sturdy work boots. He is holding a Runaround Sue, a specialized tool that braids the lines in preparation for rigging the ship.

The press and public are welcome to attend.

The Shipbuilder project depends on financial support from foundations, corporations and individual donors. To show your support through a donation, log onto www.shipbuildermonument.org. For purchases of a full size replica of the statue please contact Kathy Cox, Project Chair at 703 684 1732.

Message from Eileen Romanelli

As many of you know, Eileen Romanelli, SNAME's Member Services Department Manager, has been out of the office on long term sick leave since April. Eileen is being treated for lung cancer, but faithfully communicates with Headquarters almost every day, and is in very good spirits.

At our SMTC&E last month in Washington, DC we had a large "Get Well" card on display, and attendees who know Eileen were given an opportunity to let her know how much she was missed this year by writing messages of good wishes on the card.

Eileen would like everyone to know that she greatly appreciates the kind words and positive thoughts you all expressed. She is enjoying the card and spots a new signature and message each day (there are quite a few!)
