Building on Our Success
The tremendous success of
the World Maritime Technology Conference and Exposition
has led SNAME to re-evaluate our Annual Meeting, and to make some exciting changes.
The first change is the
name - no longer will the meeting be titled the Annual Meeting. It will now
be called SNAME Maritime Technology Conference and
Expo. This will assist in our marketing efforts, will broaden the
base of attendees and exhibitors, and generate greater attendance and participation.
Be on the lookout for information regarding 2004's
SNAME Maritime Technology Conference and Expo in upcoming issues,
and on the website.
In the meantime, save the date! September
29-October 1, 2004, in Washington, DC.

Papers
for 2004 SNAME Maritime Technology Conference
Washington, DC, September 29th - October 2nd
Authors
who have not yet submitted their drafts should request an extension by
contacting Debbie Sirotiak, dsirotiak@sname.org.
The earlier a paper is submitted the better, since all papers must be
circulated to all of the members of the Papers Committee, who must then
have time to read them before the Committee meets in December. Authors
should note that this first submittal should be a draft of the paper or
a substantial brief, rather than a short abstract - the Papers Committee
must be convinced of the value of the content and of the ability of the
author(s) to complete the paper. The more complete and convincing the
submittal now, the more likely it will be for the paper to be accepted
by the Committee. To submit the draft, send it to dsirotiak@sname.org.
The
Ship Production Symposium will again be fully integrated with the SMTC.
The tentative due date for submitting drafts/presentations for SPS is
January 13, 2004.

"The New Internet"
Have you experienced a shutdown
trying to download a large file? Are you inundated with spam? You’re not
alone. The Internet is now 30 years old and a mess. More than 600 million people
use Web services worldwide with 72 percent of Americans on line once or more a
month and 30 percent of Chinese, among others. Over $3.9 trillion in e-business
transactions will take place over the Internet in 2003.
The problem is that the
Internet wasn’t designed to handle this kind of volume, and, certainly
no one in the 1970s anticipated its tremendous growth. Now we are adding technologies
such as streaming media, file sharing, and video-conferencing to this antiquated
system.
According to David duVernay,
writing in the “Monadnock Shopper,” who quotes from an article in
the October issue of “Technology review,” nearly 100 leading computer
scientist, backed by some heavyweight industrial sponsors, are working to replace
the Internet with a newer, smarter model.
A project called “PlanetLab”
