Reflections
on the Annual Meeting
by Phil Kimball, Executive Director
"Have
a Magical Day!" said the Contemporary Hotel's operator after
answering my question. Our 109th Annual Meeting at Disney World
in Orlando, Florida was under way in the land of fantasy and
make-believe. Would we make our attendance projections? Would
we meet our guaranteed number of room nights? Would people cancel
at the last minute? Would the changes we made to the program
be accepted and make a difference?
No problem! The weather cooperated and our members showed up
in numbers exceeding all projections! The International Maritime
Exposition was oversold, and a success for all according to
the informal poll I conducted during the two action-packed days
visiting the marine suppliers, vendors and exhibitors manning
the 123 booths. We improved on the Treasure Hunt, expanded the
continental breakfasts and added both a Student Job Fair and
the Pre-Banquet reception in the Expo Hall, which provided opportunities
for everyone to see more of the exhibits, and to network with
students, friends and colleagues.
The
15 technical papers were exceptionally well attended, and some,
including the containership and Titanic papers, were filled
to standing-room-only crowds. The new panel discussion on emerging
markets, and the ad hoc T&R Panel reports were equally well
attended, and received glowing reports. This, of course, will
help us to plan events that continue to meet your needs and expectations
in the future. Also participating this year were representatives
from the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP) who presented
technical progress reports of ongoing work in ship production
and research.
The
highlight of the President's Luncheon included the presentation
of numerous awards followed by the Business Meeting and election
of Bruce S. Rosenblatt as the president-elect of the Society.
We were reminded by his father, Lester, that he and Bruce were
only the second father-son presidents in the history of the
Society, and Bruce acknowledged the importance to him of having
his father in attendance.
Now
we forge onward to Boston for the 2002 Annual Meeting - just
10 short months away, to be held at the Westin Copley Plaza
Hotel, right in the heart of this historic city. Here, more
innovation and improvements await you. One such change and a
big bonus will be the overlapping of the Ship Production and
NSRP meetings with our Annual Meeting. This two-for-one event
and other surprises should not be missed. See you there!

Student
News - Special Report
by Dr. Richard Boutwell, Chair, Student Congress
SNAME
STUDENT MEMBERS ARE UNITED !
The
Orlando meeting was a major milestone for SNAME student members
as they banded together to design, develop and test an air-cushion
vehicle, and to approve new by-laws describing the relationship
between the Student Steering Committee (SSC) and other elements
of Society governance.
The
Student Congress was attended by over 75 students from all corners
of the globe and another 30 society members with a special interest
in student leadership development. The Congress began with the
Lisnyk Student Award winners conducting a presentation of their design
which received great accolades from the rest of the student
body. The Congress continued with the air-cushion vehicle design
competition. The level of enthusiasm, commitment to success,
and just plain fun, was outstanding.
The
student member activities continued later that afternoon with
the Student Law Making Session. Over 55 students attended this
"first-of-a-kind meeting" to develop and approve by-laws, and
nominate and elected new SSC representatives and officers. The
officers include: Chair, Jim Wolfe (Virginia Tech); Vice-Chair,
Korin Strome, (Exxon Mobil); Secretary-Treasurer, Tim Keyser
(UNO); Electronic Media Chair, Laura Slavicek (University of
Michigan); Communication Chair, Jessica Hopper (Virginia Tech);
Meeting Chair, Brent Blackburn (UNO); Design Competition Chair,
Daniel Bell (Marine Institute MUN); Education Chair, Holly Clarke
(FAU), and the International Chair, Rob Tagg (University of
Strathclyde). There are additional SSC representatives from
MIT, Webb Institute, Merchant Marine Academy, University of
California Berkeley and Texas A&M.
The
SSC Student Section representatives will gather in the months
ahead to compile Society issues affecting leadership development,
governance, and to plan programs sponsored by the Society like job
fairs, internships, co-op programs, mentoring programs, membership
incentives, scholarships and formal connections between the
SSC and SNAME's Standing Committees.

Standards Panel
The
T&R Steering Committee has formed a new Subcommittee on Standards
to take on, in part, the work originally performed by Panel
M-44. The purpose of M-44, and now of the new subcommittee,
was to provide a single point of contact within SNAME for the
circulation of proposed standards, to enable SNAME members to
comment on draft standards within their areas of expertise.
The subcommittee is chaired by Roger Butturini, rbutturini@dandp.com,
who replaced Tom Conroy as chair of the panel on 3 October.
