~ Call for Discussions ~

All of the SNAME and Ship Production Symposium papers and SPS presentations for the annual meeting, the SNAME Maritime Technology Conference and Ship Production Symposium, are now available for review and discussion - click here.

Discussers are asked to follow the instructions located at www.sname.org/discussers.htm. Formal discussion should be submitted expeditiously to facilitate consideration by the authors. Papers and presentations for the T&R Sessions and the Student Papers Sessions will be posted as they become available.

61 of the SNAME and SPS papers and presentations have been evaluated and accredited for continuing education credit, at 1 PDH each, as indicated in the technical program schedule. A PE attending the SMTC will therefore be able to earn as many as eleven PDHs by attending technical sessions.

Student Section Report

Memorial University of Newfoundland

The MUN Student Section of SNAME begins each academic semester with a section meeting, typically including a presentation by a guest speaker, followed by a pizza lunch or refreshment. After returning from their work terms, students are eager to get together and this forum provides an excellent opportunity for our Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering students to exchange information about their own work experiences, employers and other relevant information to the development of their careers...read more.

JETS Pre-Engineering Times
September 2005 Issue

Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), focuses on opening the world of engineering to junior high and high school students, parents and educators. JETS provides information about engineering careers as well as programs and resources that illustrate real-life teamwork and problem-solving skills. At the beginning of this year SNAME became a participating member of JETS.

Alert! Human Engineering Bulletin

Issue No 9 of the International Maritime Human Element Bulletin Alert! focuses upon the efficiency and reliability of the seafarer, the human “glue” which binds the ship and its systems into an efficient, safe and productive unit. The bulletin, published by The Nautical Institute and sponsored by Lloyd’s Register EMEA points out that the seafarer is just as susceptible to failure and breakdown as the ship and equipment, if he or she is not protected by standards and codes, or if the tolerances have been set too fine because of poor working and living conditions. SNAME Scholarships

Since 1933, the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers has awarded many scholarships for both graduate and undergraduate study. This is to encourage men and women to pursue studies in the naval architectural and marine engineering or closely related fields. United States and Canadian citizens as well as qualified foreign members of the society are eligible for consideration. Read more ...

2006 Scholarship Fund Appeal

While all are being asked to consider the plight of the Katrina and Rita hurricane victims and to make donations to charitable organizations serving their needs, including the displaced SNAME student members at UNO, it is also important to remember that SNAME has an annual scholarship program that needs support as well. The costs of higher education continue to rise at double digit rates while the SNAME funding for scholarships has remained nearly constant over the recent years. Last year, a scholarship fund raising effort was initiated and will be continued this and coming years. The goal is to essentially double the SNAME Scholarship funds available for the program over the next five years.

When the SNAME Dues Bill comes in your mail (or email), please note the section in the lower portion set aside for making donations. There are several activities that need support, including the Scholarship Funds. It should be noted that the undergraduate scholarship program supports scholarship awards in 14 U.S. and Canadian schools while the graduate scholarship program supports U.S., Canadian and Foreign applicants wishing to study in the U.S. or Canadian schools as well as U.S. and Canadian applicants wishing to study in recognized foreign institutions. A $50.00 contribution to the Scholarship Program from each member of the Society would go a long way toward meeting the current goal, and those wishing to make a larger contribution, such as in a bequest, could make a lasting contribution to raising qualifications of young professionals entering our field.

Please be generous!

PE Update
2006 PERC Offering

The 2006 P.E. Review Course (PERC) for those preparing to take the April 21, 2006 Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering P.E. exam is scheduled to start on Monday, January 9, 2006 and is expected to be completed on Wednesday, March 29, three weeks before the exam date. Candidates who want to start the course early so that they have more study time may register for the 2005 course, which is still available on-line, but at this time without any online instructor sessions. Then, when the 2006 course starts, they can extend their registration to the 2006 course at no extra cost, continuing their study but at that point with the online instructor sessions. Taking the course this way has been successful for several registrants in the past couple of years and seems the best approach for those needing the extra study time.

The cost for the course is still $500 for SNAME members and $650 for non-members. To sign up for the course contact Rich Mouk at Society Headquarters: rmouk@sname.org or 201 798-4800, X 3044.

The 2005 NAME Exam pass rate for first-time takers was 93%, the same as in 2004, so we believe that the course has been very effective.

For candidates in California and Oregon, application should be made to Washington State so they can take the exam in Seattle. This has also been a successful approach for many in the past. Filing deadlines in many states are coming up soon, so use the www.ncees.org site to obtain contact information and qualification requirements, deadlines, and restrictions.

For further information, email Walter Maclean or David Chapman. We will try to respond promptly.
