Volunteers Needed for SMTC
We are looking
for volunteers to help HQ staff with registration, collecting
lunch tickets, manning the SNAME Expo booth and helping out at the Technical
Program desk. We are asking for people to volunteer two hours of their time
to help make the event go as smoothly as possible. Volunteers will gain exposure
to a large cross-section of the attendees. In the past, volunteers have used
these opportunities to expand their professional network and catch up with long-lost
associates. To help out, please contact Texas Section Chair, Lars Ronning (lars.ronning@conocophillips.com).
Your help is greatly appreciated!

Student
Mentor Program
Now
is Your Chance to Make a Difference
Dear
Member;
SNAME is establishing a Student Mentor Program to assist
of the Society’s Student Members, and provide them with increased
recognition of the importance of being part of a professional society.
The Education Committee has developed this program with
the goal of establishing a personal relationship between Student Members
and "regular members" of the Society with the intention that
it will eventually increase the retention of our Student Members as they
graduate and transition into our industry.
The proposal for a Student Mentor Program has been approved and accepted
by the Executive Committee at its August 8th meeting. At this time we
are looking for volunteers to participate as Student Mentors. Each mentor
will be requested to maintain contact with two or three students. This
contact can be as simple as a "pen pal" approach via an occasional
email to check on the Student Member for guidance and communicate support.
Once assigned, the mentor - student relationship will continue until graduation
or as long as both parties desire to maintain their contact. Students
will thus be provided with an experienced contact who is professionally
established in the industry, and will be able to impress upon them the
importance of being a contributing member of the profession. The mentor
will also be someone whom they can contact to discuss Society, educational,
professional, and industry issues.
As regular members, you are well respected for your experience and success
in the industry. Additionally, you know the high value of SNAME membership
and the importance of contributing to our profession. We request your
support by volunteering to participate in this program. We believe that
mentoring will benefit both the Students and members by establishing lasting
relationships within our Society and by offering SNAME regular members
the opportunity to give back to the industry as Mentors.
Should you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact
Edith Nowak. |

Message from a Member- Thank-you for the "Katrina Pages"
Dean Compton,
I wanted
to send my thanks and appreciation to you for SNAME's putting up webpages to
help those affected by the Hurricane. We really appreciate it. I know of a number
of people relocating and looking for new and temporary jobs. As well, putting
together a fund to get the UNO Students to and from the Convention is a fantastic
gesture. I was only a week into my masters, but I know there were plenty of
ex-Webbies bopping around UNO.
My job is
still intact, and my apartment was too (although, they sold it as a condo the
day after the storm and I'm being evicted, but I have my belongings). I'm counting
myself as a very lucky one. There are four families in my office that are now
homeless, we're scrambling to try and find any decent living situation we can!
One family had a kid who was a senior in high school, another family had a mother
pregnant with her first. One family was staying in a borrowed trailer in the
middle of a cattle ranch in Texas, another family on a chicken farm in Missouri.
One semi-retired boss had a gorgeous '20s Steinway Piano with a player-type
mechanism, now covered in Mississippi Mud.
There are
plenty of stories from the ship yards, and plenty of heroism from the Louisiana
natives, each of which seems to have some type of flat-boat. My own boat-in-progress
made it, but I'm going to have some aesthetic work to do.
But for
now, I have to get back to work! Thank you again for all of SNAME's help.
Best Regards,
SNAME Member

Reduced Fees for International Members
SNAME has dramatically reduced its fees for members who live in countries where
the average income is significantly lower than in the United States.
In a new tiered system, which will become effective on January 1, 2006, the
annual cost of membership in SNAME, which has been $125.00 worldwide, will remain
at that level in the U.S. and other nations categorized as “high-income”
by the World Bank, but will be reduced by half, to $62.50, in those nations
classified as “upper-middle income” economies, and by 75%, to $31.25,
in all other nations. Read
