Breathless
in Boston!
(Impressions of the Annual Meeting in Boston, September 25-28,
2002)
A significant
increase in attendees and an unprecedented 90 non-member registrations,
simultaneous technical sessions for two independent conferences, a sold
out IMExpo, a dozen committee meetings, two continuing education courses,
officiating at seven major events, organization of over 112 awards and certificates,
a myriad of details among the Ship Production Symposium, SNAME and the hotel,
and just socializing with friends and colleagues over the four days left me
'breathless' in Boston!
It's Sunday
morning after the Annual Meeting, the sun is shining and I'm catching a breath
as I gaze out the Westin's windows reflecting on the previous week's events,
which by all counts were nothing less than extraordinary. We had hoped for
a larger participation by overlapping two events, the Annual Meeting and the
Ship Production Symposium. In fact, we had 612 paid registrants, and almost
200 more visiting just for the IMExpo for a total of over 800! This number
exceeded the registrants in Vancouver in 2000 by over 150, Orlando in 2001
not being a true comparison, having occurred soon after September 11. Clearly
this made Boston one of the best-attended Annual Meetings in years! ... click

September 11th Commemoration at SNAME HQ
At 8:46 a.m., the entire
SNAME staff gathered for a moment of silence and Phil Kimball read the following:
|
In commemoration
of the horrific events of September 11, 2001, and in the spirit of this
day, the newly acclaimed "Patriot's Day", by our President, I call for
a moment of silence by the SNAME staff -
-to remember, each
in our own way, those lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and
in the fields of Pennsylvania,
- to remember the
families, friends and loved ones of the victims, and
- to honor Americas'
newest heroes who gave selflessly of their time and energy, or lives,
to rescue the victims of these tragedies in the truest embodiment of our
American way of life.

2003 World Maritime Technology Conference
Web Site & Call for Papers

Many people
have contacted SNAME HQ regarding our 2003 Annual Meeting. This meeting
is known as the 2003 World Maritime Technology
Conference and Exposition (WMTC)! For the first time, professional naval architecture
and marine engineering organizations from around the globe are meeting at a
single conference to discuss and debate the issues facing our industry. With
San Francisco as the backdrop, an anticipated 1000 delegates from 10 countries
will meet to discuss both technical and business topics affecting the maritime
industry. The World Maritime Technology Conference
will provide a forum for discussion and exchange on issues related to the future
of the global maritime industry. The technical program promises to deliver informative
technical sessions, interactive panel discussions, topical debate by leaders in the maritime
industry, and a greatly expanded exposition.
The web site
is under construction, however, preliminary information can be found at: http://www.worldmaritimetechnology.org/.
The selection
of papers and presentations for the 2003 WMTC is under the direction of the
co-chairs of the Technical Planning Committee, Admiral Robert Kramek and Professor
Hank Marcus. Joining
Bob and Hank are representatives from each of the other 10 principal sponsors.
A key task for the Technical Committee will be to select from the many proposed
papers those best suited for each the four main themes - Ship Operations, Design
and Technology, Ship Production, and the Role of the World's Marine Technical Societies
Facing the Challenges of the Global Economy. Just as SNAME's Papers Committee
is responsible for papers for our annual meetings, each of the other 10 principal
sponsors will use its own papers committee to select and review the papers
that will be presented.
SNAME members are encouraged
to prepare and submit an expanded abstract and outline of the proposed paper by
the November 8th due date. If at all possible a first draft of the paper would help
in the selection process. The Technical Planning Committee will work
closely with the representatives of the other principal sponsors to ensure that
the final program is truly an international collaboration.

LINK-OF-THE-MONTH
October's
Link-of-the-Month is the SNAME Student Website!
Created by Bridget Rossow (University of Michigan) and Jane Louie (Virginia
Tech), the site is a wonderful example of what can be done on the world wide
web. Bridget and Jane are co-chairs of the Student Steering Committee this year.
The Student Steering Committee link says, "The Student Steering Committee
(SSC) is a group of students who want to promote student participation in SNAME.
The committee is comprised of undergraduate students and recent graduates who
volunteer their time to work with SNAME to help open up more opportunities for
student activities." The Membership link extols the virtues of SNAME
membership and offers links to our membership forms. The site is well designed
and easy to navigate. Great job Bridget and Jane!
