of Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, and Ocean Engineering who
have been affected by the devastation of hurricane Katrina. more...

To SNAME
members and associates in the Gulf states,
On behalf
of your 6,600 colleagues in SNAME, may I express our extreme concern for your
plight in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. While our professional expertise
deals regularly with developing ships and offshore systems which can withstand
extreme ocean environments, we are humbled and awestruck by the power of nature
recently exhibited.
SNAME has
established an electronic resource to help you in this most difficult time.
From the homepage, members and non-members can access “Hurricane Katrina
– SNAME’s Response” in which 3 sub-sites have been developed.
- Jobs, Resumes, and Message
Board - post jobs, resumes, and search listings
- Section Links - a list
of all our sections and Student Sections combined on one page for easy access.
"Special Student Links" are located at the top of the page so students
can readily see what is going on and get help and info from various schools.
- Donation Information
Special
thanks to Connie Cali-Poutré and Elias Mazur for getting this up and
running so quickly using valuable input from Bruce Rosenblatt, Joe Comer, Bob
Kramek, and Phil Kimball.
While all
SNAME Sections – Professional and Student – stand ready to offer
assistance, I’d like to thank especially the Texas Section and the City
of Houston for being such great neighbors to the folks hardest hit in Louisiana,
Mississippi, and Alabama.

PE Update
The Naval Architect and
Marine Engineer PE Exam Principles, Abilities, Knowledges and Skills (PAKS)
survey is now complete, and the data have been sent to NCEES. THANK YOU to
all who participated. Over 800 surveys were filed including almost 300 from
US PEs in 36 states, a broad range of membership representing 43 percent of
the SNAME US member PEs. Respondents gave a 98% approval of the survey coverage
as adequate, so the Survey Development Committee also deserves CONGRATULATIONS
for a job WELL DONE.
A review of PE Exam application
filing deadlines has revealed that several states have advanced their deadlines
by as much as two weeks. All those planning to take the exam next April must
check with their state boards or go to the NCEES web site, www.ncees.org
(click on Licensing Boards, then your state).
A number of people have
already signed up for the 2006 PERC that is to start on January 9 in order
to extend their study time by starting early with the 2005 materials. Those
retaking the course and all new registrants have access to the site. To join
the course contact Rich Mouk at SNAME Headquarters rmouk@sname.org
or (201) 798-4800, extension 3044. Course tuition remains at $500 for SNAME
members and $650 for non-members.
If answers to P.E. questions
are needed, email Walt Maclean or

Scholarship Program Fund Raising
As we
all know, the costs of college education are continuing to increase and lately
at double digit rates from year to year. A recent study found that students
today spend, on average, more than $600 a year for books alone, and even more
for technical books. Tuition has been increasing similarly. Even in state-supported universities $15,000 -$20,000 tuition is not uncommon, while $40,000
or more is typical for private universities. In consideration of these increasing
costs, it is vitally important that SNAME raise additional funds for support
of the undergraduate and graduate scholarship programs.
The SNAME Scholarship Program is funded primarily by annual contributions from
the membership and from the SNAME operating budget. Since the 2005 funding available
was the same as it was fifteen years ago, a fund raising
drive was initiated and will be continued this year. The goal of the frive isz to significantly
increase the endowment level and annual contributions to allow awarding of
scholarships in amounts commensurate with the increased costs of today's technical
education. As the annual dues bills are sent, it is hoped that each
member will remember the importance of his/her technical education and make a
significant contribution in support of the SNAME Scholarship Program.
Any member considering Estate Planning is encouraged to make a bequest to the
program for a lasting contribution.
If any questions need to be answered about the program and its needs, please
email the Scholarship Committee Chairman, Scott McClure at ScottM@ACMA-INC.com
or the Functional VP, Education, Walter Maclean at wmaclean@sname.org.
