SNAME Papers Approved for CEU's- Instructions and Form Available
All of the SNAME papers
that will be presented at the SMTC
in Washington have been approved for continuing education credit for New York
State licensed Professional Engineers (and therefore for credit in those other
states that have applicable reciprocity agreements with New York State) at
the rate of one PDH each. A PE attending the SMTC
will therefore be able to earn as many as eleven PDHs by attending technical
sessions. Only the SNAME papers have been approved, and not
the papers or presentations at the SNAME T&R Sessions, at the Student
Paper Sessions, or at the Ship Production Symposium Sessions. PEs who take
advantage of this opportunity and want the credit that they earn to be certified
and recorded will be required to submit a one-page form for each paper, accompanied
by payment of a service fee of $15 per paper for members ($25 for non-members). NOTE:
to complete the form, you must supply your P.E. license number - BRING IT
WITH YOU!

Section
Pages on SNAME Website Have Been Updated
The
Section pages (all 18 of them!) have been updated to reflect the new
officers for 2004-2005. Each Section Chair and Web Liaison received
an e-mail last week asking that they review their respective pages and
advise Connie and Debbie
of any changes or corrections.
Most
of our Sections now maintain their own websites (linked from the SNAME
site) which gives the sections the ability to post their own meeting
schedules, meeting minutes, photos, and other activities. We are delighted
to see the fresh ideas, new designs, and current info.
Click
here to view all the Section pages.
to view the Student Sections page.
If
your section does not maintain its own site, please feel free to contact
Connie and Debbie - we'll be glad to help you get started! Our
goal is to have ALL SECTIONS on-board in 2005. |

P.E. Update
All of you who plan to
take the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering P.E. exam on April 15,
2005 should be starting your applications by now. The deadline for filing
applications in some states is as early as six (6) months before the exam
date. If you are unsure about your state’s deadline, you should go to
www.ncees.org where you can find contact
information for your state board of professional engineering. Then you should
plan on taking the Professional Engineer Review Course (PERC) that SNAME will
offer from January 10 to March 30, 2005. This course has eleven (11) weekly
Units with ten (10) different instructors presenting a broad coverage of the
exam specification material, including many questions for you to solve, sharpening
your skills and knowledge in progress.
If you want to get a head
start on the PERC so you can stretch out your study time, last year’s
course is still available to start on, and then you can continue to take the
2005 course, including its latest updates, when it starts. In order to do
this, contact Rich Mouk at rmouk@sname.org
who can make the necessary arrangements. One SNAME member who travels a lot
did this last year with success on the exam and reduced pressure for studying
while on business travel.
We have recently received
good news from a Texas member who told us that the latest Texas P.E. roster
shows there are now 23 NAME PEs. That’s just great! And, in addition,
for the past three years, they have had a 100% pass rate for the Texas examinees.
That’s even greater!! Congratulations!!!
For those current PEs
who have Continuing Professional Competency requirements to meet, The SMTC
in Washington D.C. will have 23 accredited SNAME paper presentations to choose
from credited at one hour each. We look forward to seeing you all there at the end
of the month.

Search is on for Navy's 1st Sub
Historically obscured by the Confederate Navy's
Hunley, the USS Alligator sank under tow
in a storm off North Carolina. Its discovery could revise the books.
By Michael Kilian, Washington Bureau
WASHINGTON --Undersea explorers will plunge into the waters off Cape Hatteras
and into the depths of long-forgotten history Sunday in hopes of finding the
141-year-old wreckage of the U.S. Navy's first submarine.
Named the Alligator because of its green color and the leglike oars that initially
propelled it, the vessel was launched in 1862. It failed in its assigned missions
against Confederate targets in Virginia's Hampton Roads area and sank off North
Carolina's Outer Banks while under tow in a fierce storm in 1863. Click
