SNAME SMTC Papers Approved for
Continuing Education Credit

All of the SNAME papers that will be presented at SMTC in Washington have been approved for continuing education credit for New York State licensed Professional Engineers (and therefore for credit in those other states that have applicable reciprocity agreements with New York State) at the rate of one PDH each. A PE attending the SMTC will therefore be able to earn as many as eleven PDHs by attending technical sessions. Only the SNAME papers have been approved, and not the papers or presentations at the SNAME T&R Sessions, at the Student Paper Sessions, or at the Ship Production Symposium Sessions. PEs who take advantage of this opportunity and want the credit that they earn to be certified and recorded will be required to submit a one-page form for each paper, accompanied by payment of a service fee of $15 per paper for members ($25 for non-members).

Special Delivery of SNAMeNewsLetter
Coming Soon!

Yes, our SNAMeNewsLetter is growing up. It seems like only yesterday we announced the birth of this new member benefit (actually, it was New Year's Day of January 2001!). If you look back at our first issue you will see we've come a long way, but we're not stopping here. We are going to improve the "delivery" of our newsletter. In the near future, you will no longer get the rather bland e-mail notification that says "click here to view". Instead, you will receive the entire newsletter in your own e-mail box!

To summarize, here are the new features:

  • the SNAMeNewsLetter will be delivered to your e-mail box
  • a special "archive button" will be within the body of the newsletter for easy access to back issues
  • members who have e-mail programs that do not read html code will have the option to click on the usual index page to view the newsletter

The new "special delivery" method should be ready by September - I'll keep you posted.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at connie@sname.org.

Archeologists Explore Sunken Napoleonic Ship

News from Marine History Information Exchange Group (MARHST-L@post.queensu.ca)

ROME: Scuba diving archaeologists have begun excavating a Napoleonic battleship that was sunk in a battle almost 200 years ago from a lagoon near here, Xinhua reports.

The Mercure, a lightly armed French navy corvette, was sent to the bottom of the sea off Cape Tagliamento in February 1812 after a 40-minute battle with the English warship Weasel. It was discovered by chance in 2001 when local fishermen found one of its cannons caught in their nets Most of the ship's hull is still in one piece, along with much of the deck and eight cannons. The wreck is the only known example of a Napoleonic corvette and local experts are keen to discover details about its construction and equipment.

The first underwater studies of the wreck were scheduled to begin on Monday. The scuba-diving archaeologists include four students from the ancient sciences department of Venice's Ca' Foscari university.

The battle in which the Mercure sank came towards the end of the 17 years of French control over Venice. Although Napoleon had conquered the city, he was unable to establish his supremacy at sea, where England continued to be the dominant sea power, even in the Mediterranean.

The results of the Mercure excavation - including artefacts and video footage of work done underwater - are expected to be collected together and put on show in a public exhibition next year.
