Gulf of Mexico WWII Deep Wrecks Project

Marine History Information Exchange Group
e-mail

The U.S. Minerals Management Service announced on Thursday an expedition that will study seven World War II-era wrecks in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The wrecks range in depth from 280 feet to approximately 6,500 feet. This multidisciplinary study will look at the impact of these wrecks on their nearby surroundings, as well as the way the vessels themselves deteriorate over time.

The expedition, which sails next Thursday, will be posting daily updates, images and (every other day) video clips from the ship. Multidisciplinary classroom materials, targeted for grades 6 to 12, are currently being developed and will also be posted for free download.

Additional background information is available on the project website: www.pastfoundation.org/DeepWrecks/
