NAME Professional Exam

For those planning to take the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineer (NAME) Professional Engineer examination on Friday, April 16, 2004, it is important that you start the application process soon. The License Board Survey originally conducted in 2000 has been updated as of July 2003 and is now available online at www.sname.org/LBSurvey2003.pdf.

It should be noted that deadlines for filing applications are as early as six (6) months (in the case of Maine) before the examination date (October 3 in the case of New Jersey). The survey includes contact information and email addresses. Further information can be obtained from the NCEES web site at www.ncees.org.

Reduce Corrosion Costs and Increase Readiness

This recently released U.S. Government report titled "Opportunities to Reduce Corrosion Costs and Increase Readiness" makes important recommendations about how the Department of Defense should deal with corrosion, noting that it is at least $10 billion problem annually and that many of these costs could be saved.

Designing Ships for Zero Maintenance

The joint ASNE/SNAME Maintenance Panel is initiating a series of workshops under the title Designing Warships for Zero Maintenance. The concept is based on the idea that the majority of lifecycle burdens are predetermined when a ship is built. The first of these workshops is scheduled for 14-15 August in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA. For more information click here.
