Request for Information
From Owners and Operators of
Diesel-Propelled Vessels Fitted with Exhaust-Gas (Waste-Heat) BoilersIn recent years the incidence of exhaust-gas boiler fires on diesel-propelled vessels has increased. Panel M-42 of the SNAME Ships' Machinery Committee is collecting data for the development of guidelines to help prevent exhaust-gas boiler fires.
If you are an owner or operator of a diesel-propelled vessel fitted with an exhaust-gas boiler, we urge you to contact the Chairperson of Panel M-42, William J. Sembler, at semblerw@usmma.edu to obtain a copy of the survey. The survey will enable Panel M-42 to obtain current information on the design, operation, and maintenance of exhaust-gas boilers and to identify trends on the incidence and avoidance of fires. Therefore your input will be valuable even if you have not had a problem in this area.
A copy of the report generated based on the survey results will be forwarded to all of the respondents. In addition, with permission, companies responding to the survey will be acknowledged in the report. However, the names of respondents will not be linked to specific responses in anything published.

August's Link-of-the-Month is SNAME's Canadian Atlantic Section. The Section has a nicely designed page which is easily navigated by clicking on their links - Meeting Schedule (with more updates coming very soon), News, Section Officers, and Student Section at Memorial University of Newfoundland. The Student Section area is very active, and features even more links. I found the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland page to be very well organized, colorful, and extremely informative.
Congratulations, Canadian Atlantic Section and their Student Section, on a job well-done!
