Rosenblatt Scholarship Fund

SNAME sadly announces the death of Lester Rosenblatt who passed peacefully in his sleep on June 15, 2003. He was a Past-President and an Honorary Member of the Society to which he devoted so much of his time and energy.

The Society will be establishing a scholarship fund in memory of Lester and his father, Mandell Rosenblatt. Both were strong proponents of our industry and felt that the education of young engineers was an important element in the strength of our future. Those wishing to contribute to the fund may send checks, made out to “Rosenblatt Scholarship,” in care of Barbara Trentham, The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, 601 Pavonia Avenue, Suite 400, Jersey City, NJ 07306.

Member Benefits

Dear Members,

Our benefits committee is very pleased to announce a new Long-Term Care Insurance Program for the members of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. The program is available to you and your family, including spouses, partners, parents, parents- in-law, and children ages 18-84. The program will support multiple carriers, as well as discounts secured and negotiated by the Society.

The issue of long-term care has become more prominent in this country during the past few years. The rapid expansion of the elderly population means increasing numbers of American families will be faced with the problem of long-term care. The consequences for these families can be financially draining.

Younger adults, too, can face the decision of how to pay for extended care needed because of an accident or illness, since most company-provided medical benefits do not cover long-term care expenses, and disability benefits are intended to cover loss of income.

Just as planning ahead for retirement income is important, taking steps to protect your financial security is also important. To help you, The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers has evaluated several providers of long-term care insurance products and has chosen Joan Resnick as the Program’s liaison. Joan’s contact information has been listed below – we strongly recommend you take advantage of her expertise and invest some time in planning for your future.

Remember, long-term care insurance can offer you protection that is not provided by other benefit plans or Medicare. These policies cover a wide range of support services such as nursing home care, care provided at home or in an adult day care center, and assisted care living.

Please contact Joan Resnick at: 800-609-9020 or joanresnick@mailstation.com

Sincerely,

Member Benefits Committee

P.E. Update

The 2003 NAME examination results are in and we understand that there were 26 examinees. We haven’t been told how many or who were successful, as NCEES only knows the examinees as a number, and the states have their privacy rules to follow. But, if last years’ results are applicable, we expect that there are about 19 new NAME PEs. The Society extends sincere congratulations to all of them for a job well done.

We have received emails from some of the successful examinees, and would like to know who all of you are. So, if you haven’t already let us know what happened and where, we would very much appreciate it if you would send us an email with the news.

Furthermore, if you know colleagues who have taken and passed the exam, we would appreciate hearing of the good news so we can congratulate them. Send your emails to: wmaclean@sname.org or to: dchapman@sname.org.
