RECRUITMENT DRIVE

2001 Recruitment Drive

In June, we initiated a membership recruitment drive. Letters have been sent to professionals who belong to other maritime organizations or subscribe to industry publications. Should you, as a member, receive a recruitment letter, we apologize in advance. It was because our computer was unable to match your name and address, as it appears on the mailing, with the name and address under which your SNAME membership is recorded. If you return the reply card to Deborah Sirotiak at Headquarters, for this inconvenience, we will gladly credit you with $10.00 in SNAME Bucks towards the purchase of SNAME publications.

2001 Nomination Program

At the end of May, we initiated the new "Member-get-a-Member" Nomination Program, part of our "21st Century Membership Drive," which was introduced in a recent SNAMeNewsFlash and emailed to our members. This campaign will not only benefit your associates and the Society, but will provide you with the opportunity to win valuable prizes, including a free year of membership for 2002, and/or a PALM VII handheld computer. To date we have received 70 nominations. Keep up the good work!

For those of you who may have missed the announcement, it may be accessed at http://www.sname.org/newsflashes/membership/membershipcampaign.htm.

If you desire more information on this program, please contact Deborah Sirotiak at the SNAME Service Center, 1-800-798-2188 or by e-mail at dsirotiak@sname.org.

"WHATEVER HAPPENED TO ........."

Too few members keep us up to date with career changes and other professional information. In many cases members' files contain nothing more than the original application information! Therefore, we are asking members to send us resumes or other outline biographical summaries. We ask only they be limited to two or three pages at the most. Please mail them to Eileen Romanelli at headquarters, or e-mail them to her at eromanelli@sname.org.

Request for Pictures

The Society is developing a photo library to cover all aspects of the marine industry. The images will be used in our publications and will provide a historical record. For publication, we must have glossy prints, slides, or negatives. If only scanned photographs are available we can accept them if they are at least 300dpi at 100%. We will also need written permission to use the photographs. Of course, credit will be given for photos that are used if such information is provided. If you or your company have suitable pictures or questions, please contact Susan Evans at sevans@sname.org or Alan Rowen at arowen@sname.org.

Engine from USS Monitor Raised

HATTERAS, N.C. (AP) - The steam engine from the USS Monitor was brought to the surface Monday, 138 years after the celebrated Civil War ironclad went down in a storm. A crane aboard a 300-foot oceangoing barge raised the 30-ton engine from the Atlantic 16 miles off Hatteras Inlet. The Monitor, once described as resembling a "cheesebox on a raft," revolutionized naval warfare when it battled the Confederate ironclad CSS Virginia to a draw in March 1862 at Hampton Roads. It was history's first clash of ironclads. The ships featured iron plates to repel cannon balls, and the Monitor had a revolving gun turret that, in modern form, is standard on warships today.

Port Industry Day

Cargo volumes at the Port of New York-New Jersey set a new record in 2000 and that level of growth is projected to continue as the Port begins a major redevelopment of its maritime facilities. But, is the bi-state New York-New Jersey region ready for the projected port growth? This is the question that will be addressed as major steamship carriers, terminal operators, shippers, government agencies, labor and management meet for the second annual Port Industry Day.

The full-day event, sponsored by the New York-New Jersey Port Promotion Association, will be held on Wednesday, September 12, at Liberty House in Liberty State Park in Jersey City, N.J. More than five hundred key maritime officials are expected to attend. The morning symposium will include two panels: the first focusing on the future of the maritime industry and the second outlining the Port's plans to handle the additional cargo coming into its facilities. Top executives representing all aspects of the transportation industry are scheduled to participate as panelists.

Following the panel sessions, an International Food Festival will be held from l to 5 P.M.

TRITON Visit

In preparation for the visit to New York by the UK Trimaran Demonstrator vessel RV Triton in June, SNAME headquarters assisted the UK Ministry of Defense by arranging for some sixty representatives of the northeast maritime industry, including officers of local Sections, of the IMarE Branch, of CMA, SMPE, and representatives from Webb Institute, SUNY Maritime College, and USMMA, to be invited aboard.

With an LOA of 97m and a displacement of 1100 tons, the Triton, which was delivered in October of 2000, is large enough to take the project into the ocean-going test phase. Initial work in the early 1990's indicated significant potential benefits in using a trimaran hull for warships. Among the benefits are:

  • Reduced power for high achieved speed.
  • High stability, allowing larger weapons and higher sensor locations.
  • An aviation-friendly upper deck and superstructure arrangement.
  • More flexibilty in machinery options and arrangements.
  • Greater survivability.

During the initial phase of Triton tests, issues of structural design, seakeeping, and maneuvering characteristics will be resolved. Structural design has been a principal concern because of the need to limit structural weight to the equivalent of frigate practice, but without much historical precedent. The ship is steel, built to meet the DNV Rules for High Speed Light Craft, and is fitted with a USN trials instrumentation system with over 300 input channels to a central recording facility.

The Triton is presently fitted with a diesel-electric propulsion plant, driving a single propeller in the main hull. In subsequent phases beginning in 2003, alternative machinery installations, perhaps including gas turbines, fuel cells, or a permanent-magnet motor, may be fitted. The vessel may be used concurrently as a test bed for alternative sensors and for unmanned aircraft development.

Although there is a level of intergovernmental involvement in the trimaran project, the Triton is owned by the UK MOD through its Defense Evaluation Research Agency (DERA). She is registered as a UK merchant vessel, fitted largely with off-the-shelf commercial equipment, subject to survey and inspection, and is civilian manned.

Further details are available on the DERA web site, www.trimaran.dera.gov.uk.
