JETS - May 2005 Issue

Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), focuses on opening the world of engineering to junior high and high school students, parents and educators. JETS provides information about engineering careers as well as programs and resources that illustrate real-life teamwork and problem-solving skills. At the beginning of this year SNAME became a participating member of JETS.

Student Design Competition Participation Growing Stronger but we Still Need More Entries

SNAME has a number of student design competitions each year that attract entries from Europe and South America as well as the U.S. Both the number of competitions and the number of entries have been increasing. The two oldest each have more than 10 entries this year and the two newer competitions have seven and two entries respectively. However, we still need more entries.

The granddaddy of the design competitions is the Dr. James A. Lisnyk Student Ship Design Competition for ships above 500 tons displacement. The Lisnyk SSDC is open to undergraduate students who are Student Members of SNAME and/or ASNE in their final undergraduate year of an accredited naval architecture program. Students can enter as individuals or in teams of up to six students. Designs shall meet the requirements for the identified in the competition rules. Read more ...

SNAME HQ Student Intern Opportunity

For the seventh year in a row we are able to provide an opportunity for a high-school student now finishing his/her junior year who is considering a career in marine engineering, naval architecture, ocean engineering, or a related field, to assist in the administration of the T&R Program and other activities. This is a paid position at SNAME Headquarters in Jersey City, New Jersey. The office is easily accessible by public transportation. While most of our interns have come from local high schools, others have boarded with friends or relatives in the area for the summer. Interested students should apply directly to Prof. Alan Rowen at arowen@sname.org with resume and cover letter defining specific skills and career goals. Click here for a notice suitable for posting or circulating. We expect to fill the position before the end of June.

SNAME Technical and Research Ad Hoc Panel 13

Head-Sea Parametric Rolling and Resulting Vessel
and Cargo Securing Loads

The panel's web site is now available at
www.sname.org/committees/tech_ops/roll/home.html.

The panel is working to better identify sea and vessel characteristics that initiate parametric rolling, to propose procedures for vessel operators to avoid or to reduce its effects, and to develop design criteria for new vessels. The panel is seeking anecdotal information, personal accounts, research reports, and other relevant information. Contributors are invited to contact the chairman, William N. France, at WFrance@HEALY.com. Sensitive information will be protected.

FAST 2005
International Conference on Fast Sea Transportation

FAST2005 will be held in Saint-Petersburg, Russia from June 27 through 30, 2005. This is the eigth in the series of world-known conferences dedicated to fast sea transportation, earlier successfully held in Norway, Japan, Germany, USA, Australia, United Kingdom and Italy. These conferences provide a representative forum for discussion of new concepts and designs of fast sea ships and vehicles, matters of hydro-dynamics, structures, materials, maneuverability and steerability, propulsion complexes, safety and operation, as well as infrastructure and economics of fast sea transportation. PE Update

Results of April's NAME exam will be announced later this summer, hopefully by mid July. Result letters are generally sent by each state board by U.S. Postal Service and are generally not given by telephone or e-mail. If you go to your state board's website (http://www.ncees.org), you should find notification of the results delivery.

For those preparing for the April 21 2006 NAME exam, note that the filing deadlines are about six months before the exam date, so NOW is the time to initiate your application process.
