50th Anniversary of "Motions of Ships in Confused Seas”
to be Marked at WMTC

The tremendous impact that the 1953 SNAME paper “On the Motions of Ships in Confused Seas” by Manley St. Denis and Willard J. Pierson, which established the foundation for rationally predicting seakeeping characteristics of ships, will be again acknowledged at the upcoming World Maritime Technology Conference in San Francisco, at the International Luncheon on Saturday, October 18th.

In 1973, the 20th anniversary was marked at Webb Institute of Naval Architecture: click here for a photo taken at that event. Who are these people? Well, watch this space for a list, but in the interim, if you can identify everyone correctly, send your list to contest. We'll reward the first three readers with completely correct responses a 10% discount on their next purchase of a SNAME publication!

Human Systems Integration Symposium 2003
(HSIS 2003)
"Enhancing Human Performance in Naval & Joint Environments"
23-25 June 2003
Sheraton Premier Hotel Tyson's Corner, Vienna, Virginia

On June 23-25 leading scientists, engineers and flag officers will discuss how human systems integration (HSI) will revolutionize the structure, training, budgets, and manning of our military forces. As technology advances, budgets decrease, and manning and training costs increase, defense organizations must make intelligent changes to their systems, acquisition strategies, and cultures. This symposium will address these issues --along with new technologies and research--and their importance and impact on the success of America's defense.

SPONSORED BY the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE), Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), International Conference on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), Surface Navy Association (SNA), The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), U.S. Air Force Acquisition & Environmental Planning Office, U.S. Army MANPRINT Directorate and Assistant Secretary of the Navy (ASN RDA), Chief Engineer (CHENG).
