New SNAME Publication - IPME

INTRODUCTION TO PRACTICAL MARINE ENGINEERING

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers announces the publication of a new introductory textbook for students of marine engineering. This is a book intended for use in the classroom and on the floor plates. The book is published in two volumes, with approximately 170 pages of text in the first volume, and some 280 pages of illustrations and tables in the second volume. This format was selected to allow students to examine the illustrations while reading the text. Technology of the Ships of Trafalgar: an Homage to their Designers and Constructors

Announcement and Call for Papers

The ships that met at Trafalgar bore on their keels the progress of Naval Architecture. Naval constructors in England, France and Spain had refined their designs during the Century of Enlightenment, with the contribution of new engineers that graduated from the new Schools of a modern, more scientific Naval Architecture. The ships of the three nations collected in their timbers the history of naval technology in each country, showing their similarities and their differences that had been generated by three centuries of developments and combats at sea. To commemorate the battle with an homage to the Naval Constructors and Naval Architects that fabricated the ships that fought at Trafalgar, this International Congress is presented for the participation of recognized international authorities in the design, construction and technology of those ships. The goal of the Congress is to develop a COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE NAVAL ARCHITECTURE OF THE SHIPS AT TRAFALGAR, with reference to: their designers and builders; their conception and construction and their predecessors; the values of the technology that was then afloat; and the impact that the “lessons learned” from the Battle of Trafalgar had on the naval architecture of the ships that followed.

TV Show on Fishing Vessel Losses
Members of SNAME's Fishing Vessel Panel Interviewed

DEEP SEA DETECTIVES: WINTER OF DISASTER

The documentary presentation WINTER OF DISASTER, is the fourth episode of the new season of the series DEEP SEA DETECTIVES. It will be shown on May 16th, 2005 at 10:00 pm EST on the HISTORY CHANNEL.

January 1999. In less than two weeks, three clam fishing boats and 10 men are lost inexplicably off the Eastern seaboard--two off the New Jersey shore and one near Cape Cod. The vessels--the Beth Dee Bob, Cape Fear, and Adriatic--all sank suddenly, with almost no warning. While the weather may have been a factor in each sinking, these were experienced crews and they had survived worse. Deep Sea Detectives try to find common denominators in the sinkings, hoping to provide answers for the still-grieving families. Were the vessels safe when they set sail? How did the captains run their boats? Is there something about clamming itself that could present a vital clue?
