WMTC 2006 - Two Ways to Participate

WMTC 2006 will be hosted by IMarEST in London, 6-10 March 2006, in partnership with SNAME and some 22 other organizations. IMarEST plans to present about 180 papers in ten subject streams over the course of the conference. At this time SNAME members are invited and encouraged to participate in the technical program by volunteering to serve on papers committees and by submitting papers. For a list of the subject streams click here, or visit the conference site at www.wmtc2006.com.

Participation on WMTC Papers Committees

Each of the subject streams has its own papers committee, or Conference Organizing Group (COG). The COGs will conduct their business electronically, so that travel to attend meetings should not be necessary. The COGs will select the papers to be presented from the submitted synopses, and then oversee their preparation and review. SNAME members wishing to participate should select an appropriate subject stream from the list (click here) and submit brief evidence of their expertise in that area to the SNAME Technical Director at arowen@sname.org, for forwarding to IMarEST HQ and the COG chairmen. Members appointed to the COGs will be issued user names and passwords enabling the on-line process to go forward.

Submitting Papers for presentation at WMTC 2006

Abstracts of the papers must be submitted directly to IMarEST by 3 May 2005, through the conference web site www.wmtc2006papers.com/cgi-bin/submission1.cgi. If you submit an abstract please also send a copy to SNAME HQ, to Edith Nowak at enowak@sname.org so that we can keep track of them and be able to assist should questions arise. Please mark the copy for WMTC06.

The first WMTC in 2003 was organized by SNAME and was considered by all to be a great success. SNAME participation now in WMTC 2006 is a way for individual members to help to enhance the Society's international reputation - an opportunity too good to pass up.

Maritime Security Policy - Draft Implementation Plans

On December 21, 2004, President Bush signed the National Strategy for Maritime Security (HSPD-13). Working groups from the U.S. Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security have prepared draft implementation plans for various aspects of the strategy.

Stakeholder input is sought with regard to: Maritime Transportation System Security (MTSS); Maritime Commerce Security (MCS); and Maritime Infrastructure Recovery (MIR).

The Maritime Security Policy is a work in progress, with strategy and implementing requirements being developed in tandem.

Pre-Engineering Times - April 2005

SNAME has been developing an Outreach Program for the past two years. One facet of this overall initiative includes the ONR-funded program to reach out to high schoolers with promotional materials to interest them in the fields of naval architecture, marine and ocean engineering. Other elements of our program include information relating to high schools featuring cirricula in the marine sciences, Women in Engineering, and JETS.

This last program, Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS), focuses on opening the world of engineering to junior high and high school students, parents and educators. JETS provides information about engineering careers as well as programs and resources that illustrate real-life teamwork and problem-solving skills. At the beginning of this year SNAME became a participating member of JETS, and the attached newsletter, April's issue of The Pre-Engineering Times from JETS, is a sample of its important content.

PE Update

Friday, April 15 has come and gone and we are now hoping that all of the 34 P.E. Review Course registrants who took the 2005 NAME exam that day were successful. Of course, it will be a couple of months before results are announced, so we can only hope for now.

On the other hand, now is the time for those planning to take the next NAME Exam on Friday, April 21, 2006 to apply to their state boards and to start to collect study materials. The first step for anyone who has not passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is to arrange to take that exam, which is given in October and April. Application must be made well in advance. Study materials for the FE are posted on the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying website at www.ncees.org.

The Society’s very successful P.E. Review Course (PERC) will start on Monday, January 9 and be completed on March 29, three weeks before the NAME exam date. Tuition for the 2006 PERC will be $500 for SNAME members and $650 for non-members.

A P.E. license is now considered an important qualification for promotion for Navy and Coast Guard officers and government civilian employees, so for those who qualify, sponsorship for the PERC may be available from annual training funds. PERC registrants who want a head start can use the previous year’s course materials, joining next year's course for access to the latest revisions and to participate in the Online Sessions with the instructors.
