The
Fulton Project
Creating an alternative
maritime based educational environment
for the emerging adolescent
A Gates-EdVisions
Schools Project
By Capt.
Craig Dalton, Roger Bourassa, and Derek Zimonja
During a
walk down the hallways at Mass Maritime Academy we pass the entrance to one
of the liquid labs. Excitement is in the air as sophomore cadets enrolled in
a Ship Construction Course are demonstrating the capacities of their models
in the Annual Ship Construction Contest with help from students attending a
unique, maritime-based educational program for middle school students at the
Marine Museum at Fall River, MA.
The cadet
groups have been given a construction list with which to construct their models
and a choice to construct a dry cargo carrier or a liquid cargo carrier. They
could, if they chose, incorporate normal ship construction techniques into their
models, to increase longitudinal strength, and to increase subdivision and reduce
free surface effects, or experiment. The winners would be determined first by:
the ship models that remained in stable equilibrium that did not capsize or
sink, and secondly, by the models that loaded the most cargo.
Assisting
in the loading and testing of the various models, is a group of middle school
students who have been studying displacement and Archimedes’s Principal
at their school, and have been in email communication with the cadets throughout
the project. The students have observed the test results over the Internet from
a previous section of cadets, and are now seeing how their suggested ideas have
been incorporated into the current models and discovering how these models will
fare.

National Geographic Channel Special
"Return to Titanic"
WASHINGTON,
April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The most famous shipwreck in modern history, the R.M.S.
Titanic continues to captivate our imagination and to draw audiences into the
mystery of her death almost a century after her fatal collision with an iceberg.
Now a destructive combination of natural forces and human intrusions is threatening
to force the complete collapse of the wreck into the ocean floor. Almost two
decades after discovering the sunken wreck of the Titanic, National Geographic
Explorer-in-Residence Dr. Robert Ballard is returning to lead a scientific expedition
on an urgent quest to determine the factors hastening its ultimate deterioration.
On Monday, June 7, 2004 at 9 p.m.
ET/PT, National
Geographic Channel will provide audiences with unprecedented access to the ongoing
expedition by broadcasting a one-hour special "Return to Titanic."
The telecast will originate from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) research ship Ronald H. Brown and include the first-ever live telecast
from Titanic's watery grave, some 12,000 feet under the Atlantic Ocean. "Return
to Titanic" will follow the expedition's progress every step of the way
and bring viewers right up to the moment as the show concludes live from almost
2 1/2 miles beneath the sea. This television event will be hosted onboard by
Jay Schadler, Emmy(R) award-winning ABC correspondent and National Geographic
Channel veteran. Schadler will follow Dr. Ballard's progress and guide viewers
through each phase, both above and below water, allowing audiences to experience
the expedition's investigation as it unfolds.

On May 20,
1933 the U.S. Congress approved by joint resolution the designation of "National
Maritime Day" on May 22 of each year. Since then, America has celebrated
this day in recognition of those U.S. Merchant Mariners who have served their
nation faithfully during peace and war. Throughout the United States each May,
many cities, civic groups, and maritime-related organizations hold Maritime
Day events to recognize the achievements and services of the U.S. Merchant Marine.
In addition,
every year The International Maritime Organization (IMO), which is the United
Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety of shipping and
the prevention of marine pollution by ships, celebrates World Maritime Day.
The exact date of World Maritime Day is left to individual governments but is
usually celebrated during the last week in September.

U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy Report
Calls for Local Participation, Better Coordination
For Immediate
Release
April 20, 2004
Contact Brian Kennedy or Nicol Andrews at (202) 226-9019
Washington,
DC - Today the Congressionally charted U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy released
its draft report, marking the single most comprehensive review of our oceans
in 35 years. After governors from all 50 states have 30 days to comment, the
Commission will issue its final report to Congress and President Bush.
"As
Chairman of the Committee with jurisdiction over these critical ocean issues,
I am pleased with the effort that the Ocean Commission has taken in producing
such an obviously substantive review," said House Resources Committee Chairman
Richard W. Pombo (R-CA). "Most important, it appears the Commission has
focused on the need for improved coordination between scientists, fishermen
and all government entities. More than half of all U.S. citizens live in coastal
communities, so it is very important that they be an integral consideration
in shaping the next ocean policy."
