Social Events - Begin your WMTC experience with an evening cruise aboard the San Francisco Belle as we open our social program with the President’s Reception on Friday, October 17, 2003. Saturday, October 18th has been set aside for the International Luncheon at the Moscone Center. SNAME President Bruce S. Rosenblatt will preside at the International Luncheon at which the “2002 Elmer A. Sperry Award,” for advancing the art of transportation, will be presented to Raymond Pearlson for the design, development and installation of the first of many Syncrolifts. In addition, we will mark the 50th anniversary of the watershed paper “On the Motions of Ships in Confused Seas” by Manley St. Denis and Willard J. Pierson.

Sunday, October 19th an International Banquet will be held at the Westin St. Francis Hotel. Join members of the 12 Principal Sponsoring Societies from around the world to usher in a new era of international cooperation, and celebrate the extraordinary gathering of international maritime organizations at this not-to-be-missed event. The banquet will also feature presentation of two of the Society’s prestigious awards, The David W. Taylor Medal and the Vice Admiral “Jerry” Land Medal, for outstanding accomplishments in the marine field, as well as a noted principal speaker in the maritime industry. Don’t miss this very special evening.

Human-Powered Submarine

In May 2001, Three US Merchant Marine Academy midshipmen presented a paper "Design Construction and Operation of a Human-Powered Submarine" to the SNAME NY Metropolitan Section. For photos of the submarine, appropriately named "Jonah," click here. The submarine was subsequently entered in last fall's 6th International Submarine Race in Bethesda, Maryland - for more photos and information about the race see www.isrsubrace.org/index.htm.

Great Lakes/Great Rivers
Spring Meeting

The Great Lakes/Great Rivers Section of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers will hold its Spring meeting at the Hilton - Greater Cincinnati Airport, Florence Kentucky, May 29-30. The Program will begin with an Early Bird Reception Thursday evening. Technical Papers will be presented Friday Morning and a tour of the Marine Engine Manufacturing areas of the GE Aircraft Engines Cincinnati facilities is scheduled for Friday afternoon. Two-Way Transits at Panama Canal

The Panama Canal Authority announced trials of simultaneous, two-way transits of large commercial vessels through the Gaillard Cut - the most narrow passage in the Panama Canal.  The Cut was widened from 152 meters to 192 meters along straight stretches and up to 222 meters on curved areas.  The trials will eventually lead to two Panamax-size vessels transiting simultaneously in opposite directions. ICMES 2003

Papers to be Posted for Discussion

ICMES 2003 is scheduled for May 18-21 in Helsinki and Stockholm, and is sponsored by SNAME, IMarEST, and the NY Met Section. Papers will be posted on the conference web site, www.hut.fi/Units/Ship/ICMES2003, during the second week of May, with an invitation to submit written discussion.

It's not too late to register for the conference, which will start at Helsinki Technical University, and will continue as a cruising conference onboard MS Silja Serenade en route to Stockholm. Airfares to Helsinki have never been lower.
