Conference on Escape Evacuation and Recovery
SNAME was represented at
the 1st International Conference on Escape Evacuation, and Recovery:
Survival from Ships and Offshore Structures, by David S. Chapman, P.E.,
in London in March. The conference was attended by ship owners/operators, government
regulators, safety equipment manufacturers, and researchers.
Chapman presented a paper
on Disabled Passenger Evacuation, using criteria developed
under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Among the key concerns identified
at the conference were the ability to evacuate passengers in high sea states,
the capability of recovering large numbers of passengers (especially in heavy
seas), and the availability of recovery resources in remote areas such as the
Antarctic. For an abstract of the paper, please click

Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge's
remarks at the American Association of Port Authorities Spring Conference
Each year about nine million containers enter our 361 seaports, representing
more than 95 percent of overseas trade. More than eight thousand internationally-flagged
vessels make 50,000 port calls annually. And nearly 200 million passengers on
cruise ships and ferries travel in and out of these ports. Secretary Ridge spoke
about related issues at the AAPA meeting on March 23.
