Project
Outreach

“Project
Outreach” has officially begun! Project Outreach is a
program funded by the ONR, and is designed to encourage high-school students
to pursue rewarding careers in science and engineering in general, and naval
architecture, marine engineering and naval engineering, advanced marine design
in particular, through the dissemination of information on ship design-related
careers. SNAME, along with ASNE, has been tapped to create, design, produce,
and administrate this Outreach program, and efforts are well underway. Read

T&R Organization Chart is Updated
This latest
release of the organization chart reflects a number of recent changes and also
corrects some long-standing omissions. Among the changes are the transition
of two of the successful ad hoc panels into the standing committee structure:
Panel O-49 Working Vessel Operation and Safety will continue the work of AHP
12, and Panels M-45 Fuel Cells and M-48 Nuclear Propulsion will carry on with
the work of AHP 10. Maritime Security, formerly a subcommittee, is now Panel
O-48. A new panel, AHP 14, will address Oily Water Separators. Click
here for a copy.

Participation in SNAME T&R Activities
Members who are interested in participating in T&R activities should contact the committee or panel chairman directly, using the live links on the SNAME web site, with a message indicating their interest and a cv or other description of their expertise. In addition, many of the committees and panels that have not activated their web pages could use the assistance of a computer-literate person willing to act as e-media liaison. Members interested in helping that way are also urged to contact the chairmen via the web site.

ASNE/SNAME Committee on Environmental Engineering Call for volunteers
Each year
the ASNE/SNAME Committee on Environmental Engineering,
through the leadership of Greg Kirkbride (AMSEC-Rosenblatt), solicits volunteers
to serve as judges at various regional science and engineering fairs. The Committee
finds judges, gives them really nice plaques, and empowers them with the authority
to award plaques to students who show promise in areas related to marine environmental
engineering. You do not need to be an environmental engineer to serve as a judge.
You do not need to be a member of ASNE or SNAME. All you need is a big heart
and the goodness to spend a few hours during one morning giving back to the
community.
And this
is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community. The kids get a lot
out of it (both from working on their projects and from the judging process),
and the folks who serve as judges walk away with the satisfaction of knowing
that they have done something meaningful. And often the folks who serve as judges
walk away better educated. After all, some of these kids are very smart.
This year
we still need judges for the following fairs:
- Northern Virginia (Arlington
County) - Wakefield HS, Arlington - Saturday 05 MAR 2005
- Montgomery Country Maryland
- Montgomery County Fairs Grounds - Saturday 12 MAR 2005
- Prince William County
Virginia - Grace Metz School, Manassas - Saturday 12 MAR 2005
- Loudoun County Virginia
- Heritage High School, Leesburg - Thursday 17 MAR 2005
- District of Columbia
- McKinley Tech HS, NE, Washington - Saturday 19 MAR 2005
- Prince George's Area
Maryland (3 counties) - PG Community College, Largo - Saturday 19 MAR 2005
- Fairfax County Virginia
- Robinson Secondary School, Fairfax - Saturday 02 APR 2005
If you would
like to volunteer for any of these fairs, please contact:
Greg Kirkbride at (202) 608-8485, or gkirkbride@mrosenblatt.amsec.com.

California
Maritime Academy - The California Maritime Academy Student
Section has increased activity over the last year and a half, beginning with
hosting 57 visiting students from 9 academic institutions aboard the Training
Ship during the 2003 World Maritime Technology Conference held in San Francisco.
We had a great time meeting our fellow students and showing them around the
city by the bay. This year we have a set goal to raise enough money to send
five students to the 2005 SNAME Maritime Technology Conference and Expo in
Houston, as only two students were able to attend the 2004 SMTC&E due
to limited funding.

Memorial
University of Newfoundland - The MUN Student Section of SNAME
begins each academic semester with a section meeting, typically including
a presentation by a guest speaker, followed by a pizza lunch. After returning
from their work terms, students are eager to get together and this forum provides
an excellent opportunity for our Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering
students to exchange information about their own work experiences, employers
and other relevant information to the development of their careers. In addition,
students have an opportunity to mingle with guest speakers and their professors
in a relaxed environment, serving as an excellent way to break down some of
the barriers that students may feel exist in educational institutions.

Stevens
Institute - The SNAME student section at Stevens Institute
of Technology has engaged in many activities in the past year. One of which
included, the opportunity for students to listen to some of the pioneering
work and technical papers on planing hull hydrodynamics presented by the stalwarts
in the field of naval architecture and hydrodynamics.

University
of British Columbia - The Naval Architecture program at UBC
has begun 20005 promisingly. A record number of students have registered for
the long-awaited introductory courses, the upper level courses are full, and
the graduate program has been very busy as well. The large showing of students
at recent SNAME and SNAME associated seminars reflects this increased activity.

University
of California at Berkeley - On December 10, 2004, Cal-SNAME
(University of California - Berkeley’s SNAME Student section), hosted
an end-of-the-year "Bay Architectural" Boat Cruise on the San Francisco
Bay.
In attendance were members of Cal-SNAME; students from the California Maritime
Academy of Vallejo; members of Northern California SNAME Section; and the
faculty, staff, and students from UC Berkeley’s Ocean Engineering Graduate
Group. The social event was a wonderful opportunity for Cal and CMA students
to interact with one another, and with the local professional members.

University
of Michigan - The University of Michigan Student Section’s
purpose is to provide service to our student peers and our college, and to
actively participate in SNAME events. Within the UM SNAME Student Section
is the Quarterdeck Honorary Society. Membership in Quarterdeck is based on
student member service to the department and the UM SNAME Student Section.
Active students in our section also provide service to our student peers by
organizing cooperate luncheon presentations for visiting recruiters, and by
coordinating the Department’s Annual Spring Banquet to celebrate graduation
with departing seniors. We are also working to arrange Student Section Meetings
patterned after local Great Lakes/Rivers (GL/GR) meetings, in which students
will present student projects or speak about other student activities related
to our field.

Webb
Institute - The Solar Splash competition began in 1994 and
is known as the "World Championship of Intercollegiate Solar Boating."
The competition presents the seemingly-contradictory challenge of designing
a boat that runs well in both displacement and planning modes. Displacement
performance comprises 40% of the total scoring, with teams running two endurance
heats for distance over two-hour periods with 68 pounds of lead-acid batteries
and a solar panel array rated at 480 watts. Planning performance comprises
25% of the total scoring, based on a 300-meter drag race for time with 100
pounds of lead-acid batteries. The balance of the scoring consists of 10%
for qualifying times, 10% for maneuverability course times, 9% for a technical
paper, 4% for a visual display and 2% for workmanship. Although teams arrive
with full batteries, once the five-day competition begins they may only be
recharged with solar energy. Since each team will have to run at least seven
races, sun conditions play a significant role in the performance of the boats
during the competition.
