Did You Miss Us?

Due to the record breaking snow storm which recently struck New Jersey, the February 15th issue of the SNAMeNewsLetter was not published.

As you can see in these photos, I was snowed in despite my husband's gallant efforts to shovel us out.

Our jacuzzi didn't look too inviting either!

The good news is, our March issue is a bit bigger - we didn't want our readers to miss anything!

Hampton Roads Section News

On January 23, the Hampton Roads Section held one of its most exciting meetings ever at The Mariners' Museum in Newport News, VA.  Nearly 100 members and guests were treated to Chief Curator Curtiss Peterson's "Monitor Conservation Project" presentation and toured the nationally renowned museum with its collection of over 800 Monitor artifacts.  The Mariners' Museum is the designated museum for the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary and is responsible for curating and conserving all materials from the Monitor site. It currently has under conservation and on exhibit the Monitor's turret, engine and condenser, propeller, shaft, and numerous other smaller items ranging from hull plates to shoes worn by members of her crew. WMTC2003 Wordbytes

This year’s Annual Meeting, the World Maritime Technology Conference (www.worldmaritimetechnology.org), with a theme of “Marine Industry Challenges in the New Global Economy,” will be very special for a number of reasons. It is the first-ever international marine technical meeting involving 12 of the world’s societies of naval architecture and marine engineering as Principal Sponsors. Additionally, 22 other worldwide marine groups and organizations have endorsed the event as Participating Organizations. All have pledged to encourage their members to prepare technical papers for the meeting, promote and advertise the event to their members, and encourage participation by member companies to exhibit their latest technology at the 175-booth World Maritime Technology Exposition. At this writing the response to our international Calls for Papers has been very encouraging, and it appears that we will have in excess of 100 papers or presentations necessitating five, or possibly six, session tracks plus a student paper track.

Currently, it appears that over half of all technical papers will be prepared and presented by international authors, and that an approximate distribution of technical papers will be as follows:

· 30% - SNAME peer reviewed Papers, T&R Presentations, Panels,and mini-symposia
· 30% - Ship Production Symposium Papers
· 30% - papes from Principal Sponsors and Participating Organizations, and
· 10% - Student papers and other presentations

In order to optimize the international aspects of the meeting, SNAME activities will be held on Friday, leaving Saturday through Monday for the international program including the technical papers, social events, and certain of the international awards. During the International Luncheon two special events worthy of global prominence will occur - The naming of the Sperry Award winner for 2003, and recognition of the 50th anniversary of the world-renowned paper by Willard Pierson and Manley St. Denis entitled “ On the Motions of Ships in Confused Seas”.

White House Office of
Science & Technology Policy

During the week of March 16-22, 2003, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) will launch the "Excellence in Science, Technology and Mathematics Education" Week (ESTME). This is a terrific program that works to support science, technology and math education through:

  • Encouraging volunteers from around the nation to be guest
    speakers in local schools;
  • Distributing education-focused posters for classroom use;
  • Cooperating with the President's Awards for Excellence in
    Mathematics & Science Teaching (PAEMST);
  • Helping to establish a partnership between science-oriented
    companies and their local schools.

If you can find the time that week, we encourage you to contact your local school and offer to speak to students on Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. This is the perfect opportunity to begin "outreach" in your own community, and who knows - you may be the catalyst for a young naval architect or marine engineer in the future! At the very best, you are getting SNAME's name and purpose out there in the community.

One of the ways SNAME is getting involved is to list SNAME HQ as well as our regional and local sections and student chapters in the "Resource Directory" section of a special website for this purpose. This Directory will include listings of scientific societies (and their regional/local sections and student chapters, if applicable) that are willing to be contacted by local grade school teachers to provide classroom guest speakers. This directory will serve as an important tool that can be used by teachers throughout the school year, and will certainly benefit our profession with the Outreach it will provide.

This type of program is exactly the type of Outreach SNAME is seeking to participate in - reaching the students at the lower grade levels and generating an interest in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering...outreach at its best! This directory will help
teachers across the country be able to utilize local resources when appropriate.

"Outreach" will be the buzz word for SNAME over the next few years - it is through outreach and marketing that we will generate awareness and interest in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineers, and through increased awareness we can grow our Society and increase membership.
