BENEFITS AND SERVICES:
SNAME PROFESSIONAL REFERRAL SERVICE
When the dues notices were issued this year, members were invited to participate in this new service. For a fee of $10, participating members categorized their expertise, and agreed to allow the release of their e-mail addresses, enabling headquarters to forward incoming requests for services that appear to match their expertise. To date about a dozen incoming requests have been circulated, and we have started to assess non-members who request the use of the service a fee as well, to help cover the cost of the necessary staff time. We do of course warn people who request the service that once a member contacts them all arrangements are between themselves and the member, and that the Society accepts no responsibilty for the results. Members who want to participate but passed up the opportunity initially may sign up now, by contacting Eileen Romanelli, Service Center Manager, eromanelli@sname.org.

NEW T&R PUBLICATIONS
We have started to fill orders for T&R Bulletin 3-37 (Supplement), which is intended to be used in conjunction with the original T&R Bulletin 3-37, Design Guide for Shipboard Airborne Noise Control. We are also beginning to take orders for T&R Report R-53, Reliability-Based Design of Ship Structures: Current Practice and Emerging Technologies. These two new releases bring to four the number of T&R Bulletins and Reports issued to date as CDs, starting last summer with T&R Report R-55, An Evaluation of Fuel Cells for Commercial Ship Applications, which was followed by T&R Report R-51, Alternative Hullforms for High-Performance Ferries. These new publications may be ordered by contacting Claudio Pujols, Publication Sales Expediter, at cpujols@sname.org, for $50 each ($25 for members), except for R-51, which is priced at $30 ($15 for members).

DSL INQUIRY
AT&T networking has submitted a proposal which offers internet access via high speed DSL lines. Several service plans, with multiple options, are available for both home and office. An added bonus: this service can be installed over an existing telephone line, allowing you internet and telephone service simultaneously!
Because high-speed internet access is expensive, AT&T is prepared to offer a group rate to SNAME members, resulting in substantial savings if enough members are interested. If you would like to participate please contact: Phil Kimball at 201-798-4800 x 3024 or via e-mail: pkimball@sname.org.

SHIPS AND MARINE TECHNOLOGY/COMPUTER APPLICATION
Notice of Meeting of Working Group 5 to Discuss Standard ISO/NP 16917 (Transportation Industry Data Transfer Standards/Product Structure Directory Standard for Ships)
Working Group 5 will be meeting on May 30, 2001, at the Norwegian Technology Center in Oslo, Norway to discuss Standard ISO/NP 16917. There will be a review of the current status, and the application of current technology including future plans for industry participation.
There is a growing need to facilitate the direct exchange of data between user systems without the need for manual processing. This requires an agreed standard between sender and receiver for naming and structuring of the data exchanged. ISO/NP16917 is a new standard in process. The structure would support the neutral exchange of digital data required by shipbuilders, ship owners/operators, shipbuilders/repairers, equipment suppliers, e-commerce suppliers/services, classification societies, port and terminal operators, ship brokers/agents/charterers, and regulatory agencies over the life cycle between systems utilizing common data transfer software.
Working Group 5 will develop guidelines for the structure and support of Data Dictionaries and the methods of indexing. It will also set guidelines for the development of data transfer documents. Interested parties may monitor progress through a standards web site, www.ISO16917.org.
