SNAME
Announces Changes in its 2003 Annual Meeting
SNAME, in conjunction with
its Annual Meeting in 2003, will host the first International Marine Technical
Conference & Exposition (IMTCE) to be held in San Francisco, CA on October 17-20,
with a theme of "Globalization in the New Environment".
SNAME will invite many of
the international marine technical societies to join us as principal sponsors
and participants in this first-time-ever event. A Conference Steering Committee,
chaired by Mr. Thomas P. Mackey, has already been formed, and a Technical Program
Committee, co-chaired by ADM Robert E. Kramek and Dr. Henry Marcus, will be
responsible for developing a superior technical program designed to attract
a wide marine audience of international presence. SNAME's goals of enhanced
technical exchange and improved communication and coordination among the societies
while significantly growing the conference through international participation
in 2003, may lead to a triennial event in the future. This event is likely to be hosted by
another of the co-sponsoring marine societies outside of the U.S.
Each principal sponsor will
be invited to nominate representatives to serve on the Technical Program Committee
to insure a balanced program of technical papers, presentations, and workshops
covering current and topical subjects in all sectors of the international marine
industry. Four tracks, each with plenary sessions, are envisioned including:
- Ship Operation (Security,
Safety & Quality, Environmental Protection, Innovative Propulsion Systems)
- Ship Design and Technology
(Recent Innovative Ships and Offshore Platforms, Interactive Ship Design and
Intermodal Transportation, R&D Needs and Activities)
- Ship Production (Major
Advances in Shipbuilding, the Ship Production Symposium)
- The Role of Marine Technical
Societies in Globalization and the New Environment (Education, Consultation
with Int'l Maritime Organizations, Acceptance of Professional Qualifications,
Sharing Technical Information).
Sponsors will promote the
IMTCE in their own countries to encourage authors to prepare
papers, members to attend the conference and local vendors and manufacturers
to exhibit at the International Maritime Exposition (IMExpo).
Mark
your calendars now, and look for further developments through the SNAMeNewsLetter!

Sperry Award
The Elmer A. Sperry Award was established in
1955 to commemorate the life of Elmer A. Sperry, whose inventions, including the gyroscope, the
first electric automobile, air and sea navigational aids, and many others, contributed to the
advancement of many modes of transportation.
The Sperry Award is unique. It is the only transportation engineering honor presented jointly
by six professional engineering societies (ASME, IEEE, SNAME, SAE, AIAA, ASCE).
John M. Dempsey, Jr. (LM) is SNAME's representative to the Sperry Board.

LINK-OF-THE-MONTH
New
Feature: There
are hundreds of links located on the SNAME Web Site. Each month, a link from
our home page will be featrued in the SNAMeNewsLetter. This month's link
is the Southeast Section home page. This
page was created by the section's web liaison, Randall R. Fiebrandt. Randy is
responsible for updating the information on the page, which in this case includes
a list of all the officers, the Southeast Section's meeting schedule, and minutes
from previous meetings going back to 1999. The page also has links to the Student
Sections in Florida. Randy installed a counter which shows how many "hits"
the page receives, and a link back to the SNAME Web Site. Great job!
