KUDOS FOR SNAMeNewsLetter

At a meeting of the SNAME Technical and Research Steering Committee on 10 January 2005, the following resolution was voted unanimously into the record:

We the members of the SNAME T&R Steering Committee commend Connie Cali-Poutré and the Headquarters staff for the Society’s excellent and innovative semi-monthly SNAMeNewsLetter. The use of color, blocks of information, and inclusion of Section News are outstanding. We encourage these continued high standards, and we note and commend the cost-effective manner of preparing and distributing this publication for the benefit of SNAME members.

Hampton Roads Section - NASA Career Days

NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) and the Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) are providing an exhibit or display for the Career Day Program on Wednesday and Thursday of Engineers Week (February 23-24, 2005). The program will be held at the H. J. E. Reid Conference Center, 14 Langley Boulevard, NASA Langley Research Center, from 9:30 a.m. until Noon each day.

Career Day provides an opportunity for students to explore technical careers as engineers, scientists and technicians. It may also reinforce or broaden a student's career objectives. In an effort to reach more students, NASA Langley and the PEC have agreed to expand the Career Days program audience to include sophomores as well as juniors and seniors.

Approximately 700 selected high school students from the Greater Hampton Roads area will attend the program. Following a short program, the students will tour the exhibits area during the interactive session scheduled from 10:15 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

For more information contact Dollie McCown at 757- 864-3561 or e-mail: Dollie.M.McCown@nasa.gov.

PE Update

The 2005 Professional Engineering Review Course (PERC) has started as of January 10th and the first Three-Hour Online Session will be held on Wednesday, January 19, starting at 8:00PM Eastern Standard Time. As the course this year will have Voice Over Internet available, it is recommended that course registrants have computers that have access to the internet through a DSL or T1 line. This will enhance the communication between the instructors and the registrants, reducing time lags for voice and speeding up the ddownload for presentation of figures.

Registration is still open at $500 for members and $650 for non-members. Go to www.SNAMeLearning.org, click on sign-up, and follow the step-by-step procedure. Alternatively, call Richard Mouk at SNAME Headquarters: (201) 798-4800 X3044.

SNAME is in process of developing the working group that will undertake the Practices, Abilities, Knowledges and Skills (PAKS) study for definition of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering survey that will be used to establish an updated NAME examination specification. To that end, email has been sent to all known SNAME PE members that includes a letter of invitation to participate and a qualifications survey to assist in selecting the working group members. Unfortunately, a significant number of the email addresses or the internet service providers are not recognized. It is therefore requested that all PE members go to the Membership Directory on the SNAME web site and make sure that their email addresses are correct. Each member must do this on his/her own as soon as possible.

The 2005 NAME PE exam has been proofed and is in the hands of the NCEES. Work on the 2006 exam is now under way and all suggestions for future exam items are welcome. Those wishing to contribute ideas should send them to wmaclean@sname.org, or dchapman@sname.org.
