History Committee Seeks Members

The History Committee of SNAME invites SNAME members truly interested in the history of naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, shipbuilding, the Society itself, and allied subjects, to contact
Barry Thomas, Chairman.

The mission of the History Committee is to:

  • provide liaison with maritime and other museums, maritime publishers and similar groups in technical and other matters relating to naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, shipbuilding, ship operation and allied fields.
  • assist the headquarters staff in determining the appropriate disposition of future donations to the Society of historical records, documents, ephemera and artifacts.
  • encourage the recording of oral history relating to naval architecture and marine engineering.
  • encourage non-technically oriented publishers of books on maritime subjects to seek editorial guidance on technical and operational matters.

ASNE Joint Sea Basing Conference

Crystal City Gateway Marriott
Arlington, Virginia
27-28 January 2005

Sea Basing is the core of "Sea Power 21." It is about placing at sea - to a greater extent than ever before - capabilities critical to joint and coalition operational success: offensive and defensive firepower, maneuver forces, command and control, and logistics. By doing so, it minimizes the need to build up forces and supplies ashore, reduces their vulnerability, and enhances operational mobility. In the decades ahead, the seas will comprise the most independent and secure maneuver space for joint military forces. Weapons, sensors, and communications systems with revolutionary reach and precision will integrate maritime forces into a unified battle space extending across sea, land, air, space, and cyberspace-providing invaluable strategic and operational advantage from the vast international domain of the world's oceans. The US Navy, USMC and the Joint Forces are currently developing designs, logistics, and operations to meet the future demands of the Sea Base. These exciting new technologies and doctrines will be the focus of the ASNE Joint Sea Basing Conference 2005.

US Dept. of Homeland Security Releases
Draft Cargo Security Strategy White Paper

A draft of the National Cargo Security Strategy White Paper was released at last month’s Cargo Security Summit. For a copy of the paper click here. The document has already been criticized for taking a fairly straight-forward process and turning it into a bureaucratic maze, and for requiring high-security mechanical seals on the doors of intermodal containers when the containers themselves are insecure and can be entered without breaking the seal.
