Member Survey Results

Thanks to all our members who participated in the survey conducted via the January 1st issue of the SNAMeNewsLetter. Our question was “Would you be willing to help SNAME to better meet your needs by responding to a web-based survey if it took only 15 minutes to fill out? Yes or No”. The response was overwhelmingly in favor of such a survey (99% in favor, 1% opposed) and therefore, our Membership Committee will proceed with the development of a web-based member survey.

From time-to-time you will see a question posted in the SNAMeNewsLetter, asking for a quick yes/no reply. This will enable us to obtain a fast response to a particular issue. Therefore, we urge you to respond and help steer us in the right direction.

Again, we thank you for your participation and look forward to hearing from you on other issues. Keep a look out for the next Quick Survey!

There is time to register!

The P.E. Review Course (PERC) Web site is up and running at www.SNAMeLearning.org and you can register on line. Although the course started on January 5th, 2004, we will continue accepting registrations through Friday January 30, 2004.

For those living in states in which the filing deadline has passed, it is still possible to file an application in other states that do not require residence. To obtain information on the states, their filing deadlines, phone numbers and addresses, refer to the State License Board Survey: click here for survey.

The basic structure of the course is presented and the Unit topics are included. The course consists of eleven (11) Units, one starting each week. The course started on January 5th and should conclude about March 24th, giving another three weeks for final review before the April 16th exam date. The course costs $500 for members ($650 for nonmembers). Unit assignments are posted on Monday, with solutions posted the following Friday. On Wednesday of the second week, an online session is held with the Unit's instructor from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM EST, to review and discuss the assignment or related matters. An email address is also given for the Unit instructors so that extra help can be requested if needed.

Should you require assistance in registering for the course, please contact Eileen Romanelli at eromanelli@sname.org.

USCG Seeks Industry Participation in Testing
Ballast Water Treatment Systems

The U.S. Coast Guard is beginning a program facilitating the installation of experimental shipboard ballast water treatment systems. Foreign and domestic vessel owners who participate in the program may be granted equivalencies to U.S. ballast water regulations for participating vessels. This Shipboard Technology Evaluation Program (STEP) is one of several Coast Guard initiatives aimed at reducing the introduction of nonindigenous species (NIS) to U.S. waters through ballast water. USCG Reaches out to Owners & Builders of Fishing Vessels

Surveys of new boats in recent months show discrepancies that would have been a great deal easier to prevent during construction or outfitting than to correct after the fact. USCG Commercial Fishing Vessel Safety Examiners are available for pre-delivery surveys. For more information, click here.
