Welcome
to 2004 and the SNAMeNewsLetter
! This year we will be implementing a few new features.
The first one is driven by the fact that we at SNAME are continually working
to improve the value of your membership in this Society. In order to do this
effectively we rely on input from you, the member. With this edition of the
SNAMeNewsLetter, we are instituting a survey question to quickly poll
the membership on a variety of topics being considered here at SNAME Headquarters.
We ask that you consider the question and respond with your personal viewpoint.
This should only take seconds to do and your input will be most helpful in our
effort to serve you. This issue's question is posted at the end of this newsletter.

Navy's

U.S.
Researchers Hope To Find The Alligator
|
|
A Recent Discovery Of The
Plans For The Alligator, Which Sank In 1863, Have Spurred The Search.
By Thomas H. Maugh II, Times Staff Writer
"An unlikely discovery
in France's naval archives has put American researchers hot on the trail of
the Union submarine Alligator, the U.S. Navy's first commissioned submarine
and the first to enter a combat zone. Unlike its Confederate counterpart, the
H. L. Hunley, the ill-fated Alligator didn't sink any ships or kill anybody, neither
enemy sailors nor its own crew. And when it was lost in a fierce storm off Cape
Hatteras, N.C., in 1863, it was nearly lost to history as well. A recent discovery
in the French archives of the vessel's blueprints, however, has stimulated new interest in the ship
and has prompted federal authorities to try to find and raise it." Click here for more.

PE Update
A number
of our members have expressed concern about being able to adequately prepare
for the NAME exam as well as the Fundamentals of Engineering exam that they
have not yet taken. While their concern can be appreciated, their abilities
should not be discounted. Several who have taken the PERC and been successful
on the NAME P.E. exam have also taken the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering as
it is now called) and been successful there as well. They have told us that
in taking the PERC they have had to review the fundamentals materials as well
and it all came back to them more easily than they had anticipated. While many
have already registered for the 2004 PERC offering, it is not too late for others
to do so as registrations will be accepted up to Friday, January 30.
For those
living in states in which the filing deadline has passed, it is still possible
to file an application in other states that do not require residence. To obtain
information on the states, their filing deadlines, phone numbers and addresses,
refer to the State License Board Survey: click
here for survey.
The P.E.
Review Course (PERC) Web site is up and running at www.SNAMeLearning.org
and you can register on line. The basic structure of the course is presented
and the Unit topics are included. The course consists of eleven (11) Units,
one starting each week. The course starts on January 5th and should conclude
about March 24th, giving another three weeks for final review before the April
16th exam date. The course costs $500 for members ($650 for nonmembers). Unit
assignments are posted on Monday, with solutions posted the following Friday.
On Wednesday of the second week, an online session is held with the Unit's instructor
from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM EST, to review and discuss the assignment or related
matters. An email address is also given for the Unit instructors so that extra
help can be requested if needed.
