News from Headquarters
|
Jersey City, NJ - Welcome to the first issue of SNAMeNewsLetter! Things have been happening at such a fast pace that the quarterly issue of SNAME NEWS, which appears in each issue of Marine Technology, is not able to contain all the news that is "fit to print." This newsletter will be published twelve times a year and will contain the latest from Headquarters as well as any fast breaking industry-related news. Suggestions are welcome: simply e-mail our Executive Director, Phil Kimball at pkimball@sname.org.

The Value of Membership
|
Any observer of pop culture knows that membership has its privileges. Although a membership in SNAME is certainly a privilege, most members don't really know all the benefits that their membership includes. Over the next year we will be exploring the many advantages your annual dues provide. We begin with the future of SNAME, the students.
- STUDENT RECEPTION - JOB FAIR: New addition to our Annual Meeting, created to offer students a opportunity to interact with leaders within the marine industry, gaining insight into employment opportunities and job placement in a social setting.
- SCHOLARSHIPS: Available at the graduate and undergraduate level. The current program provides financial assistance to those pursuing a degree in naval architecture, marine engineering, ocean engineering, and marine-industry related subjects. For more information on scholarships please contact Erlinda Faustino at efaustino@sname.org.
- STUDENT CONGRESS: An opportunity for students to utilize their knowledge of naval architecture and/or marine engineering. Organized by Dr. Richard Boutwell and judged by members of the Education Committee, the competition is open to all students attending the Annual Meeting. A cash prize is awarded to the winning team.
- STUDENT SECTIONS: Started in 1977, the concept of Student Sections was introduced to foster professional development and growth. Each Student Section has a representative on the local sections Executive Committee. Twenty-two schools in the United States and Canada offering degrees in naval architecture and/or marine engineering sponsor SNAME student sections.
Next month's issue features the heart of SNAME, the T&R program.

Survey Says...
|
Many thanks to more than 900 members who responded to the three-question survey enclosed with the first dues notice. Mentioned by President Cuneo in his Message in the January 2001 issue of Marine Technology, the responses were enlightening and challenging. They are currently being sorted using the following criteria: 1) comments and suggestions; 2) questions regarding Society-offered programs; and 3) action items.
The questions will be answered monthly in this newsletter and quarterly in Marine Technology. For those of you who have not sent your completed survey, we must receive them by February 1st in order to qualify for the drawing. The prize? Free membership for a year!

Photo Ops
Whether you're an Ansel Adams in training or just someone who points and shoots, SNAME needs your photos! Currently there are two projects for which photos are desperately needed:
- We are in the process of building a library of photos of ships and other waterborne vehicles that will be used for flyers, brochures, the website, and in the SNAME booth at trade shows. We prefer glossy photographs but will accept images electronically, if they are 900dpi or greater in either a .tif or .jpeg format. If your photo is selected for use in any of the outlets noted on the left, you will receive photo credit whenever it is used.
- SNAME --in search of the perfect holiday card shot! Do you possess a shot you are particularly proud of and feel that it maybe suitable for SNAME's holiday card? For consideration, please send to Alan Rowen here at headquarters or e-mail the image to arowen@sname.org
