Current Status of the Panel


Kick-Off Meeting

On May 14, 1998, Ad Hoc Panel #6, Structural Design and Response in Collision and Grounding, was formed under the SNAME T&R Steering Committee with support from the Hull Structure Committee, Ship Design Committee and Marine Safety and Environmental Protection Panel (O-44).


Meeting of June 16, 1998

A panel planning meeting was held on June 16, 1998 at Coast Guard Headquarters. Attendees at this meeting were: Al Brown, Paul Cojeen, Jaideep Sirkar, Kirsi Tikka and ... The following was accomplished:
  1. Review the membership.
  2. Discuss and agree to charter.
  3. Discuss and agree to panel subgroups and their respective chairs.
  4. Develop panel milestones.
  5. Plan use of the Internet.
  6. Plan ahead meeting dates.

SNAME Annual Meeting 1998  (11 November, 1998)

A panel meeting was held in San Diego at the SNAME Annual Meeting. The following was accomplished:
  1. Feedback received on proposed methodologies
    1. Need more focus - Limit current application to majority of world tankers in worldwide service
    2. Consider 4 classes of collision: right angle high energy, oblique angle high energy, raking, local
    3. Use worldwide population of ships on international routes for developing collision scenarios
  2. Present interim report at SNAME Annual Meeting 1999
  3. Present final panel overview paper at SNAME Annual Meeting 2000
  4. Arrange a 2nd International Conference on Collision and Grounding with SNAJ for the Fall 2000.

SNAME Annual Meeting 1999  (30 September, 1999)

Panel status was presented and a panel meeting was held in Baltimore at the SNAME Annual Meeting. The following was accomplished:
  1. Feedback received on proposed methodologies and work.
  2. Meeting scheduled for 12 November in Washington DC. (Changed to December 3)
  3. Other ongoing work and possibilities discussed - new bow study at MIT, possible data sources.
  4. George Wong has moved to ABS Houston and will be studying collision and grounding.
  5. Jeom Paik presented an excellent collision paper at the Annual Meeting and will be visiting ABS starting in January.
  6. Final panel overview paper will be presented at the SNAME Annual Meeting 2000.
  7. 2nd International Conference on Collision and Grounding will be held in Denmark in the summer of 2001.


Ad Hoc Panel #6 Meeting of January 14, 2000.

A panel planning meeting was held on January 14, 2000 at Coast Guard Headquarters. Attendees at this meeting were: Al Brown, Paul Cojeen, Jaideep Sirkar, Kirsi Tikka, John Daidola, Peter Gooding,

The following was accomplished:

  1. Data was discussed in depth.  It was decided to combine WG2, the Data Working Group, into WG1, the tools working group.  A data requirement summary was presented by Al Brown.  The USCG has initiated a project for the Volpe Transportation Center to work with the USCG, ABS and Virginia Tech to collect data.  Virginia Tech has also initiated an undergraduate project to collect data.
  2. The panel will make a presentation and present a paper at the SNAME Annual Meeting 2000.  A draft of the paper must be completed by 1 March 2000, and the final paper must be submitted by 26 May 2000.  A framework was discussed.  Request comments and if anyone else would like to make a major contribution, contact Al Brown, brown@aoe.vt.edu.  Paper Framework in pdf form.  Paper Framework - zipped Word file.
  3. John Daidola presented some design concepts for WG4, Design.
  4. The 2nd International Conference on Collision and Grounding will be held in Denmark, 1-3 July, 2001.
