SNAME Chesapeake Section and ASNE Tysons Chapter Present November's Technical Dinner Presentation

TITLE:  Propulsion System Choices for Modern Naval Vessels

Over the past 20 years, designers of naval vessel have been faced with a multitude of changes in the operating requirements for surface combatants.  These include greater range of speeds, added mission flexibility, and longer periods away from base with smaller crews.  Requirements for energy conservation and cleaner emissions are constantly increasing.  Fortunately the technology improvements in propulsion systems and their controls has given designers some new options to meet those challenges.  Mr Ohmayer will compare a variety of modern naval vessels from 2500 to 7500 tonnes, from both US and foreign navies, to illustrate how these requirements are being met now and what may be coming next.

Mr. Ohmayer’s technical studies were in the field of Automotive Engineering.  In 1978 he joined MTU Friedrichshafen as an Application Engineer in the Acoustics department.  From 1989 to 1995 he led the Acoustic team.  In 1995 Mr. Ohmayer joined the Sales Department of MTU, first becoming responsible for sales of submarine diesel engines. In 1997 he became the head of the MTU Competence Center, Naval Propulsion Systems, within the Application Engineering department.  Since May 2006, Mr Ohmayer has been the Senior Manager within the Application Center, Naval (Governmental) Marine with responsibility for worldwide activities for complex Naval and Commercial ship propulsion systems.  Mr. Ohmayer resides in Germany.
