Commodore

My name is Colin Shields, I am a junior and the new Quarterdeck Commodore. I became interested in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering while rowing in High School. Since starting college, I have especially enjoyed learning about ship production and fluid mechanics. Last summer, I had an internship at General Dynamics NASSCO where I saw the practical application of my education. I also coach a high school rowing team and love teaching new athletes about the sport. I am looking forward to working with Quarterdeck and the NAME students to improve attendance at SNAME conferences and continue helping students network with industry.

Vice-Commodore

My name is Diane Schroth, and I am a Junior and the Vice Commodore of the Quarterdeck Society. Along with my involvement in Quarterdeck, I am the president of the women's club water polo team. We have won big tens 3 out of the past 4 years, and we have gotten 2nd and 3rd at nationals in 2010 and 2011 respectively. As you can tell I love the water (but don't we all). My family has a boat on Lake Michigan that I have grown up on since a young child. With my degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering I would like to do something working with the Navy, although I am not exactly sure what yet.

My name is Steven DeBoer and I am from Shelby Township, Michigan and have been on the water for most of my life. I enjoy fishing, water skiing, and jet skiing. On campus I work in the recruitment and admission office giving tours of the engineering campus as well as describing the benefits of quarterdeck to prospective NAME students. I also have mentored one of the introductory engineering courses with a naval architecture and marine engineering background where students design and build a bathysphere and ROV. My after college aspirations are to get a job in commercial vessels or luxury yachts.

Program Chair

My name is Nathaniel Meredith, I am currently a Sophomore in the NAME department and hold the position of program chair. I chose NAME because I grew up sailing and decided it would be fun and interesting to design vessels. Besides Quarterdeck, I peer mentor the NAME 100-level Engineering class. In my spare time I enjoy drumming, sailing, fishing and watching hockey. After graduating with my NAME degree, I would like to work for the Navy, but I also think it would be interesting to work for a small sailing yacht company.

My name is Valerie Barthelemy and I’m a junior in the NAME department. I am currently the co-service chair for the Quarterdeck society. I am a swimmer on the University of Michigan Women’s Swimming and Diving Team and have always enjoyed the water. I am unsure of exactly which part of the marine industry I'd like to pursue, and am currently entertaining the possibility of grad school. I would also love to work outside of the U.S. for a few years.
