Author and Leadership Opportunities

SNAME members have the opportunity to make their mark on the industry.  The Society encourages and sponsors maritime research into areas of the ocean sciences, with particular emphasis on marine vehicles and offshore structures.  The work of SNAME Technical and Research committees encompasses structures, hydrodynamics, machinery, production, operation and systems development. The Society is also involved in an ongoing National Shipbuilding Research Program developed by the Ship Production Committee, which has been funded by the U.S. Navy through individual shipyard contracts.

Members can join dozens of committees and panels dedicated to the fields of their expertise.   Papers authored by these panels and individual authors are subject to presentation, with a handful selected for publication in the prestigeous annual Transactions.

SNAME Sections

The Society's 17 Sections exist within 5 regions across the world, and membership in SNAME includes membership in a SNAME Section.   These regionally based subgroups offer regular, well-attended meetings and substantial networking opportunities.  Many SNAME Sections also run research symposia and publish peer-reviewed research material semi-independently of the larger Society.

Many members find that activity in their SNAME section is one of their favorite membership benefits.  Sections link members personally to industry leaders in communities and regions around the world.  Many members also enjoy taking leadership roles and participating in community volunteer opportunities coordinated through their Sections.
