President Peter Noble Invites You to Attend the Classic Yacht Symposium (May 2-3, Bristol, RI)

As president of SNAME it gives me great personal pleasure to write this welcome note to the 2014 Classic Yacht Symposium as this will be a very important forum not only for all involved with classic yachts, but also for all naval architects, yacht and boat designers.

While not exclusively mentioned, the design of yachts and other small craft have been a staple for SNAME members over the years and I firmly belief that much innovation has come from that sector of our profession.

Around the Society

OTC, 5-8 May 2014, Houston

The Main Event… the one that started it all, OTC Houston will begin in just a few weeks! Here is a brief update on key elements.

Technical Program: All papers have now been submitted and staff are working on the proceedings CD over the next few weeks. The full technical program will be posted on the OTC website soon.

SNAME continues to play a leading role with SNAME member Ed Stokes as OTC Board Chairman and SNAME Member, Darrel Harvey as Vice Chair of the Program Committee.  These two members are supported by many others from the Texas Section and beyond, who provide volunteer time to write and review papers, organize panel sessions and take on specific tasks to make OTC a success.

SNAME has for the last several years undertaken a Mentor-for-a-Day program at OTC where seasoned professionals are linked-up with 3-5 students who are attending and conduct them around the exhibit space, introducing them to exhibiting companies and answering questions.  This has grown in popularity and we expect 2014 to see an increase in participation.

OTC, and its daughter conferences, are very important events as they not only provide excellent forums for knowledge transfer through papers, panels and networking, but also provide the SNAME with over 30% of its annual revenue.

Other special events at the 2014 OTC will include

•            Women in the Industry Sharing Experiences (WISE) - Monday 5 May – 1600-1800

The committee is working to be sure the keynote has reached out to secure the table leaders.

•            Mexico Energy Reform- Transforming the Industry - Tuesday 6 May – 1600-1800
