Journal of Sailing Technology

ISSN# 2475-370X

The Journal of Sailing Technology is a continuously published, online peer-reviewed journal, whose objective is to provide a medium for the publication of research achievements and engineering practices inherent to all aspects of sailing technology.
The Journal provides an OPEN ACCESS exchange platform for academics, researchers, students, designers, manufacturers, industry professionals and sailors alike, as well as the general public with an interest in sailing technology.
The Journal is funded by SNAME and it is free for both authors and readers.
The Editorial Board welcomes submissions in four formats.

  1. Full research papers, with unlimited word count, peer-reviewed within 8 weeks.
  2. Short research papers, under 3000 words, peer-reviewed within 4 weeks. This is particularly suitable for high-quality short research communications and high-quality student projects.
  3. Critical reviews, with unlimited word count, peer-reviewed within 8 weeks.
  4. Student paper (unlimited word count, peer-reviewed within ca. 8 weeks)

The scope of the Journal includes both fundamental and applied research based on analytical, numerical, and experimental studies. Topics include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Wind-Assisted Ship Propulsion
  • Yacht Design
  • Sails
  • Rig Concepts
  • Hull and Appendages
  • Hydrofoils
  • Seakeeping
  • Stability
  • Performance Prediction
  • Race Modelling
  • Weather Routing
  • Handicap Systems
  • Instrumentation
  • Structures
  • Materials
  • Manufacturing

Every year the Editorial Board recommends SNAME for

  • The Best Paper Award, awarded to the author(s) of the most outstanding paper published in JST;
  • The Best Student Paper Award, awarded to the student author(s) of the most eminent paper published in JST between those whose lead author is undertaking higher education studies.

Papers are nominated by the reviewers. All nominated papers published in a calendar year are considered for the awards by an Award Committee (made of the Editor-in-Chief, Deputy Editors and Associate Editors), provided a minimum of 10 papers are published for the Best Paper Award, and a minimum of 6 eligible papers are published for the Best Student Paper Award. Should a paper with a lead author undertaking higher education studies be awarded the Best Paper Award, it will no longer be eligible for the Best Student Paper Award.

Original and Timely technical papers addressing problems of shipyard techniques and production of merchant and naval ships appear in this quarterly publication. Since its inception, the Journal of Ship Production and Design (formerly the Journal of Ship Production) has been a forum for peer-reviewed, professionally edited papers from academic and industry sources. As such, it has influenced the worldwide development of ship production engineering as a fully qualified professional discipline. The expanded scope seeks papers in additional areas, specifically ship design, including design for production, plus other marine technology topics, such as ship operations, shipping economic, and safety. Each issue contains a well-rounded selection of technical papers relevant to marine professionals.

This quarterly publication publishes highly technical papers on applied research in hydrodynamics, propulsion, ship motions, structures, and vibrations. While the Journal of Ship Research requires that papers present the results of research that advances ship and ocean science and engineering, most contributions bear directly on other disciplines, such as civil and mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, and numerical analysis. High quality papers are contributed from the U.S., Canada and overseas, with representation from established authorities as well as new researchers.

This important volume has been published annually since 1893. The Transactions provide a compilation of select papers presented before the Society during the calendar year and the Society's national award winning papers for that year. The contents are divided into sections containing archival papers of exceptional quality, primarily drawn from the Society's Annual Meeting papers, which include written discussions and authors closures; SNAME major award and prize winning papers; graduate and undergraduate student award winning papers; and significant papers of such high quality and intrinsic value as to warrant capturing them in the Transactions. The volume also includes a summary of the Society's business as reported at its Annual Meeting.
