LCDR Eben H. Philips will present on:
U.S. Coast Guard Cutter POLAR STAR:  A Journey back to Mission Ready Status

LCDR Eben Philips will talk about the decision to renovate POLAR STAR, maintenance items that have been completed, and the months of commissioning and operational training required after years of inactive service. LCDR Philips will also offer a glance into the future of the U.S. Coast Guard’s icebreaking fleet given the proposed development of Arctic waters.

Propeller Slip in Relation to Propeller Performance

Presented by Mrs. Elizabeth Charmley of Seaspan

As container ships increase in size, new design territory is entered by ship designers. Propellers are getting larger to accommodate the ever increasing size of container ships and as a result, are often pushing the traditional design limits. This study looks specifically at the relationship between propeller slip and ship performance, and tries to establish a relationship between propeller slip and efficiency to determine to what extent propeller slip influences propeller efficiency.

The Potential of LNG as a Marine Fuel

The large-scale adoption of natural gas (methane) as a fuel is potentially one of the most significant trends to emerge for the marine industry in many decades. The marine industry in the Pacific Northwest, and in British Columbia in particular, is uniquely positioned to adopt LNG (and CNG) technology that offers both significant environmental and economic advantages, due to the abundance of supply, the proximity of infrastructure, a favourable pricing regime, and a potentially large vessel base that can employ proven technology. This Technical Meeting will provide an introduction to the current status of natural gas as a marine fuel in 2012, covering issues of supply, regulatory regime, engine technology, and vessel design. The presentations will also identify the challenges in each of these sectors that will need to be addressed to realise the full potential of natural gas as a marine fuel.

Seattle Meeting Notice - October

Bryan Wood of Coast Dynamics Marine Group will present:

Design for the Human Factor in High Speed Vessels

Today’s boat crews are tasked with operating vessels at greater speeds, on longer assignments, in rougher conditions and as a result have paid the price in the way of injury and shortened careers as operators. As can be expected, technology has eclipsed the abilities of a human body to naturally accommodate the forces imposed upon it. Coast Dynamics Group (CDG) has been working hard with the military and those who specialize in Human Factors or HSI (Human Systems Integration) to develop new technology, scientific analysis and intuitive approaches to ensure boat crew safety and extend the productive life-cycle of operators. CDG has developed and has in operation the necessary tools that are dramatically decreasing the probabilities of injury and are increasing the efficiency and readiness of boat crews.
