Ammonia is potentially a clean fuel that can be produced from renewable energy and can be combusted in conventional engines (including heavy marine diesels) or can be used in fuel cells.

If you would like to present a paper at the NH3 Fuel Conference, please submit a title and half-page abstract to John Holbrook by July 15. The emphasis of the paper should be on some aspect of ammonia as a fuel – NH3 production, storage, distribution, safety, and end uses. 

Abstracts on the technical, regulatory, economic and policy aspects of ammonia are also acceptable. Presentations will be 25 minutes in length with 5 minutes Q&A.

Presented to the Hampton Roads Section on March 9, 1977. In the past ten years, technological advances in the design and performance of shipyard cranes have noticeably altered methods of steel ship construction throughout the world. These advances, when coupled with innovations made in the use of cranes in support of shipbuilding activities, have greatly influenced the design of the world's newest shipyard. A prime example is the new commercial yard at Newport News Shipbuilding which houses twenty-seven new and unique cranes, each responsible for a specific task in support of the shipbuilding effort. This paper will examine closely the innovative features employed on the Newport News cranes, explaining why and how they will affect ship design and construction at the yard and how they will help improve the new facility's productivity.

The Thirteenth Propeller / Shafting Symposium is being planned by Panel M-16 of the Society’s Technical and Research Program. This symposium will address the overall propulsion transmission system of gearing, shafting, couplings, bearings, seals, and propellers. The symposium is planned for September 11 – 12, 2012 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott & Convention Center, Norfolk, VA, under the auspices of the Hampton Roads Section of the Society.

In order to develop the program, we would appreciate your submitting an abstract before March 30, 2012. Papers on the following subjects are particularly desired, but other topics related to propulsion transmission systems are welcome.

Abstracts Submission Deadline extended to Dec 2, 2011. The THIRD Chesapeake Powerboat Symposium will be held in June, 2012.  As in the previous very successful Symposia held in 2008 and 2010, the symposium will feature presentations on all aspects of Power Boat design and construction, particularly relating to Hull Design and Analysis; Materials and Fabrication; Structural Mechanics; Failure Analysis and Repair; Modeling and Simulation; Tank Testing; Software, Electronics, and Systems; Offshore Racing Developments; Propulsion Systems; Regulatory Developments; and Human Factors.

Call for Papers for 2012 SOME Symposium in Athens. The Symposium will bring together ship operators, technical managers, naval architects, marine engineers, academics, classification societies and marine transportation policy-makers to discuss and debate important issues for the maritime industry.
