ABSTRACT: Sea Land’s SL-7: A Personal Recollection of its Design, Construction, and Operation.
In the late 1960's, Sea Land, a US container carrier with about 30 ships, embarked on an 8-ship program to build ships considerably more expensive and faster than the WWII tonnage that comprised most of their fleet. Those new 8 vessels were to have operating speeds of 33 knots and were to carry almost double the capacity any of the existing Sea Land Vessels.
When the author graduated from U of M with a NA/ ME degree in 1965, he had no idea that within 2 years of graduation, he would lead the technical design and production effort of Sea Land to produce those ships. This presentation deals with personal recollections of working with the most intriguing businessman the author has ever met, Malcolm McLean.
