Charter and Objectives

On Aug 1, Ad Hoc Panel #17, Alternative Energy, was formed under the SNAME T&R Steering Committee

The objectives of the panel are:

Investigate, compare and assess ocean energy systems. Emphasize simplified methods, which can be readily applied to the design and rapid analysis of new structural concepts, including applications using probabilistic scenarios. Finite element and other more rigorous methods may be considered and used to validate simplified methods. Include comparisons to available data.

Propose a format for an ocean energy database. The database may include actual, experimental and simulated data as long as it is properly identified. Gather initial data.

Define standard scenarios and conditions for ocean energy system analyses. This may include probabilistic and/or deterministic descriptions of system stability, scalability, efficiency, etc.

Define standard criteria and methodologies for performance in extended deployments, calm seas, and storm conditions.

As tools, standard scenarios, methodologies and performance criteria are evaluated and defined, apply them to a matrix of typical and innovative structural designs and concepts. Identify promising concepts for future study.

Organization and Master Plan (also see WG plans)

The panel is organized into two working-groups:

  1. Tools (WG1) - Assessment of Ocean Energy Systems.
  2. Databases (WG2) - SNAME Ocean Energy Systems Database.

Membership

The members of the ad hoc panel are listed on the Membership page.

Interested SNAME members should contact the Panel Chair, Chris Barry, Chris.D.Barry@uscg.mil.
