STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD

Investing in the future of the maritime industry

The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust, and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, are sponsoring The Lloyd’s Register Educational Trust Maritime Technology Student of the Year Award in North America. This award is designed to highlight excellence, while encouraging students to showcase their research and investigative studies on various topics in the areas of naval architecture, marine and ocean engineering and promote leadership in the industry.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

The competition is open to undergraduates at academic institutions throughout the US and Canada that offer programs in naval architecture, marine and ocean engineering, and provides a cash award to a first and second place winner selected by a judging panel of industry experts.

1st prize $3500
2nd prize $1500
1st place faculty advisor award $500
2nd place faculty advisor award $250
The cash award is unrestricted; the winner may use it for any purpose he/she chooses.

HOW TO ENTER

  • SNAME requires competitors to be student members of SNAME in good standing.
  • Competitors develop a paper describing how their project benefits the maritime industry, based on the theme.
  • Competitors submit their paper in electronic format to the SNAME program facilitator.

THE COMPETITION

  • The theme for this year’s competition is “Maritime Technology: Advancing Lifecycle Environmental Stewardship”.
  • Declaration of Interest by students on or before November 1, 2008.
  • Deadline for submission of entries is May 2, 2009.
  • Finalists travel to SNAME headquarters to present papers to judges in June 2009.
  • Winners announced in July/August 2009.
  • 1st place paper will be published in Marine Technology and presented at the SNAME 2009 Annual Meeting in Providence RI.
